Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE "Notchy". Time to change transmission Fluid?

Just bought a 2002 6 speed with 89k miles on it from an older guy who babied it- kept all service records and really kept good care of it. The one thing I noticed though, is the shifting is pretty %26quot; notchy%26quot; .. especially getting into second from first. I would never know what the description of a %26quot; notchy%26quot; transmission was until I felt it myself. Best way to describe is it is that it feels like im slighting fighting to get it into gear.. No grinding , just not smooth... like I'm going over a notch when I'm trying to shift. Read online that it might be time to change transmission fluid if this is the case. Decided to order some red line mt-90 that should be here on Thursday:

1) Does this seem to make sense to anyone? could a change in transmission really all of a sudden give me smooth shifting relative to my problem?

2) I also heard about adding a lubricant like 'synchromesh%26quot; in with the transmission fluid change. My question there is how do you know how much to add and how do you do it?- is this necessary?

3) Any other possible causes for a notchy transmission I havent covered?

4) Anything I want to remember when changing the tranny fluid myself that Might be helpful?

Thanks for your help in advanced guys!

try everything you have mentioned, if it doesnt work you may have a bad syncro, or clutch starting to wear. either way it may require inspection.Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE %26quot;Notchy%26quot;. Time to change transmission Fluid?
First of all, changing the fluid and using the RIGHT fluid would be helpful. It should be done, anyways, Check with your dealer for the proper weight and proper manufacturer. BUT, another factor is the shifter bushings, under the car. They may be time worn, or dry. A good inspection will prove weather it is necessary to change the bushings, or just to lubricate them.Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE %26quot;Notchy%26quot;. Time to change transmission Fluid?
it either needs the fluid and filter changed if it,s automatic or if it,s manuel maybe the clutch needs adjusted.
