How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?

hi,

i have a 1999 pontiac grand am gt with 72,000 miles on it, i purchased the vehicle a couple monthes ago with about 64,000 miles on it, since then i have done spark plugs, whires, flushed the coolant system out twice to get rid of all the dex-cool, (eats engine parts) flushed the power steering fluid, brake fluid, also have done the brake pads, fuel injector cleaing, and change the oil every 1,500 miles, as you can see i take very good care of my car, the engine has alot of power, and i am very happy with my vehicle BUT.! one thing has always bothered me, THE TRANSMiSSiON FLUiD. i'VE always wanted to change it but there is no dip stick, and it is extremely hard to check the fluid, i've heard that there is a screw on the right side of the tranny at the top %26amp; you are supposed to be able to check the fluid that way, but it is still very hard. QUESTiON iS..should i change the fluid %26amp; filter myself.?? and how do i kno how much will fill it up.? or should i just leave ot alone.?How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
To change the fluid you need to go to a garage to have it done. They must hook the transmissions line that run to and from the cooler to a machine that swaps the fluid out. I don't know if GM does this but Ford does, You need to check but when you don't see a dipstick it usually mean they have lifetime fluid in them, which mean it never gets changed. If your anything like I am ,and it sounds like you are by the description of your car maintenance, I wouldn't trust that it's really lifetime and just have them change it.How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
no, no, no. there is no such thing as a lifetime fluid in transmissions, unless you want that lifetime to be a short one! change every 30-60k miles max! there's no dipstick, but search the internet there's a complicated way to check the level, and be sure to thank GM when you try to check it

I would try to check the fluid myself, and if you are sucessful (and feel positive you know the level it needs to be at) Then go ahead and take the pan bolts out %26amp; drop the pan, change the filter, and put fresh in.... I would rather do this than taking to a shop for flush %26amp; refill as sometimes doing that dislodges crud in the tranny which can block the fluid flowing and burn it up...so I usually do several changes the manual way to replace the majority of the fliud... If you can't figure out the fliud level you will need to take it in... (usually it takes quite a bit 7 qts or so?) and that doesn't include torque converterHow to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
hey, in grand am's a trans axel comes stock so in turn it is not possible to check the fluid because it is not a true transmission so to say. Only way to tell if something is wrong with your trans axel is if it is leaking fluid other than that it should be no big concernHow to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
Have the filter and fluid flushed at a professional garage. To check the fluid, the vehicle must be level and running. Remove the screw on the R/S of the case near the R/S inner tripod joint. The fluid should drip out while running. Since it is impossible to get beneath the vehicle while it is in the ground, the best bet is letting a professional handle it.How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?

Transaxles are sealed units, lubed for life and usually packed with bentonite grease, this grease will take on moisture (won't affect the lubes performance) and thin out when hot..... and cause a little seepage maybe.

You ad the fluid in the dipstick hole.Anyone know how to change the transmission fluid on a honda civic? i need to know which bolt i remove to fill?
You shouldn't need to remove a bolt. There is a filler tube located on top of your tranny. On Civic's it's usually around your shift linkage. I could have told you for sure but you didn't specify the year. But it's definitly located on top of your trans. pull out the dipstick and get a funnel and pour in a quart of fluid in it. There is a line on the dipstick so make sure that you check the low side (no matter which side of the stick looks like it's the fullest). That way you don't overfill it. And one more thing when you don't pull the pan off and change out or clean the trans filter you aren't helping your transmission that much. Because the converter holds at least 3 quarts and the rest of your trans holds at least 3 more. Only a little over two quarts should drain out when you take your pan off and change/ and or clean your filter. Hope this advice helped you out.

take off cooler hoses put one hose in empty jug,and the other hose in a bottle benz trans fluid and it should push old fluid out and new fluid should be drawn in on the return side besides benz says that is a life time fill(ya right maybe 80000 mi before they go bad)or take it to the dealer and have them do an incomplete trans service

under your car on the drivers side is a drain plug for the transmission. the plug has a goldish color and a 3/8 ratchet (with no socket on it) will fit into the drain plug. the fill plug will also be on the drivers side, but underneath the hood. you'll need a 17mm socket with a long extension and ratched to remove the fill plug. after draining the fluid, u'll need 3qts of honda automatic transmission fluid to refill it.Do anyone know the procedure for changing transmission fluid in 02 Acura 3.2 TL?

I change my fluid every 15,000 miles. I worked in atransmission shop and that was the recommendation. You can look in the owners manual also. It should tell you there. How often should i get my transmission fluid changed?
The general recommendation that I'm familiar with is every 25000 miles. How often should i get my transmission fluid changed?
Two years is a good interval unless you only put a few thousand miles a year on your car. Some owners manuals claim that you %26quot;never%26quot; have to have your transmission serviced under %26quot;normal%26quot; driving conditions and %26quot;X%26quot; thousand miles under %26quot;severe%26quot; driving conditions like towing and Taxi or mail delivery types of driving and so on.

Well, if you put at least 20,000 miles every two years on your car then I'd stick to the two year interval unless these miles are almost exclusively highway and you never tow a boat or trailer or load the car down to the axles.

Transmission service is cheap (around $60-120) and transmissions are expensive to rebuild or replace, like $2,000-3,000.

    Good Luck!

Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don't know if it has ever been changed before..?

I'm trying to determine if I should change my transmission fluid. The problem is that I don't know if it's been changed before. Ever. I bought my 1998 Saturn SL2 with 93k miles, and have had no problems. It's now at 99k, and I'm about to move to California (from AZ) while pulling a small trailer. The fluid appears red, and doesn't smell burnt. I've been told by a friend who is a diesel mechanic not to change the fluid unless you know it has been changed at regular intervals. %26quot;If it hasn't been changed ever, then new fluid eats away at some of the protective coating that the old transmission fluid has formed on the gears (or something like that) and then the transmission dies.%26quot; I have no idea whether it has been changed before or not.. Anyone have any advice? I want to keep my transmission good, but at the same time, I don't want to kill it if it hasn't been maintained properly. I don't know how it was maintained in the past.. I bought it from a dealer in AZ, but it's from Illinois.Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
Just change it. Your friend is wrong.Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
I would have it changed and have a new filter installed as well. Saturn uses a %26quot;spin on%26quot; transmission filter much like an engine oil filter. There is no pan to remove or gasket to replace. They just drain the old stuff out, spin a new filter on and fill it back up.

I would have this done by a good repair shop and have them look it over for any other problems. You don't want to be broke down on the roadside in the middle of the desert.Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
Changing the transmission fluid and filter is a routine change of fluids that should be performed on the vehicle.

For your Saturn it should have been done at 80000 miles. If you have no way to find out if it was done, then consider that it hasn't and I would have it done prior to the long haul. Pulling a trailer will heat the trans fluid considerably.

The saturn auto trans have an external (older models) filter and they usually had a magnet attached that has to be removed and installed on the new filter.Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
If the fluid is still red, then it has been changed recently. If you are going to make that trip and pull a trailer, it would be wise to change to the best trans fluid available and filth er, making sure they are the type recommended by the manufacturer. Before I make a trip I change all my fluids on my car and filters. Make sure you change the air filter and spark plugs too, this might make a huge difference on your horsepower and mileage.Should I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
I've drove cars and trucks over 250.000 miles and never changed the fluidShould I change my transmission fluid (?) - I don%26039;t know if it has ever been changed before..?
I would go ahead and have it changed. Also consider having an external transmission oil cooler installed in front of your radiator. This will help the transmission run cooler while pulling the trailer.

A newer Honda tranny is different than most. You'll notice that there is not a pan. There is however some kind of filter/screen that you don't have to replace they do that when they overhaul.

You'll find the drain plug on the passengers side of the tranny. BEFORE you pull that be sure that you have something that you can drain the fluid into . . . some people want to wear goggles just in case it splashes, it's a good idea, but not a must. Once you drain it, REPLACE THE PLUG. If you forget this you're screwed. Then go to the top of the engine block and locate you're tranny dip stick. If you're not sure where that is again refer to your owners manual. You can take a cleaned out oil just BE SURE IT'S CLEAN!! and cut out the bottom if you don't have a funnel to put the new fluid into. You want to be careful on what kind of fluid you are replacing it with, Hondas are touchy especially newer ones. Valvoline is good, but Honda has special types that they suggest you use, your manual or a local Honda dealer will know this.

Make sure you are on level ground and read your manual to find out how much to add. Usually around 2.5 - 2.7. When you've filled it. replace your dip stick, and drive your car about 3 - 5 miles. Let it get warm and then come back to level ground and check the level again. Be careful not to over fill. Also be sure the cap is clean when you put it back in. Good Luck.

Does anyone know how to change the transmission fluid on a 2007 scion tc?

I need to change it cause you should do it every 30,000 miles..and im at 36,000.. Instead of paying someone i would rather do it myself if thats possible..Does anyone know how to change the transmission fluid on a 2007 scion tc?
How you change it is the easy part. You have to drop the transmission pan unless the changed and put drain plugs in them there is only one that I know of that has a drain plug. There are at least 20 bolts that have to come out get a drain pan and take out the first 5 or 6 bolts on either side or enough to let the pan drop down far enough to drain the fluid.after it drains take the pan off and clean it out and scrape off the old gasket off just be careful not to get any deep scratches in the pan an old putty knife works pretty good make sure you scrape off all the old gasket off of the transmission to. Take off the old filter and take note of how it goes on all of the parts you need will be in the box with the new filter like the new gasket when you put the new one on you might be tempted to use some gasket maker to hold the new one on resist the urge.probably the easiest thing you can do get a threaded rod you can get them at Lowe's and have it cut down to around 4 rods about 6 or 8 inches a piece and thread them in to your transmission at the 4 corners and put the new gasket on these rods and then the pan it will hold the gasket straight while the pan goes on put the rest of the transmission pan bolts in one at a time and when you get to the rods take them out and put the bolt back in refill it with 3.7 Quarts start it check for leaks and you are goodDoes anyone know how to change the transmission fluid on a 2007 scion tc?
    it is rather easy

You have to get under the car and unscrew the transmission oil pan bolt (or bolt may be on transmission)

You probably dont have a cap for your transmission fluid to go it so you will need to take out the transmission dipstick and use a funnel to get trans fluid in the trans

probably takes 4 quarts of trans fluidDoes anyone know how to change the transmission fluid on a 2007 scion tc?

I need to change out my fluid and replace the filter. I don't know where to start or what to look for. I have a bottle of lucas and enough fluid to replace it and a brand new filter. Is there an online diagram on how to change out the transmission fluid and filter for a %26039;94 camaro?
It is messy, but be prepared. Jack car up in front and block it. Then get a BIG pan, as there is no drain plug. See the flat, mostly square pan on the bottom of the transmission, good, now loosen all the bolts, see how the fluid comes out everywhere? It runs down the frame yuck, but nessessary. When the mess is over, there is another square pan under that one, but it just has 3 screws, take them out and keep screws discard filter (square thing), then wipe the bottom of the pan out good, take new filter and install, then take just a small amount of pematex or grease or vasoline, just to keep gasket on pan straight, smear it on the pan lip and set gasket on it, then put in place, and start a few bolts, then the rest, only slightly tight, then tighten all the bolts crisscrossing back and forth, then go all around, they should be tight but not overly tight, while it's up, get some degreaser spray and spray it down and hose it off, drop car back down and fill to proper leval. Is there an online diagram on how to change out the transmission fluid and filter for a %26039;94 camaro?
I have never seen one but this can be a messy job. need to remove almost all pan bolts then when removing last few break pan loose and drain some of oil using a few bolts opposite where oil is drain to hold pan up. then completely remove pan and gasket the remove and then remove and replace filter. then clean off pan and replace gasket, then bolt back up. be sure to evenly tighten bolts, do not over torque as can break. then fill with trans fluid, but do not over fill. In doing this you will not get old fluid out of torque converter. need special equipment to flush this out.

you must drop the pan to drain on a auto plug on bottom on standardHow do i change my transmission fluid in my ford galaxy?
Well there is no drain plug on the tranny you have to pull the pan to let out the fluid. then change the transmission filter (also inside the pan and ussually a flat screen looking peice) be sure to clean the pan and tranny surface very well before reinstalling the pan. It is ussually a bad idea to change the fluid and filter on the older models because of the wear on the clutch bands in the tranny be careful you might have to replace the tranny if you do this. You mentioned gear box it sounds to me like they are refering to the rear end witch has a plug on the back axle in the center. Oh ya unless you are refering to a STANDARD TRANSMISSION in that case the best way to do it is to pull the gear shifter out and add the fluid from there. But check and be sure you put in the right fluid some standard transmissions use gear oil and others use regular automatic transmission fluid. PS if you put a little too much fluid in the standard tranny it will be okay it has a vent that will let the excess drain out. If you need more help get a Chilton's book it will show you everything you can get it at Autozone Napa Highlow anywhere... Good luck. How do i change my transmission fluid in my ford galaxy?
IMO You should take it to a transmission shop and have the transmission cooler and torque converter drained and flushed at the same time. - if you just drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid there's still gonna be about 4 - 5 quarts of dirty fluid left in the torque converter and transmission cooler.

    If it's a manual transmission;

Some of the old Fords had a magnetic drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the side... The ones that didn't have a drain plug were drained by jacking the front of the car and removing the lower extension housing bolt on back of the gearbox. How do i change my transmission fluid in my ford galaxy?
Hi there locate the gearbox, there is a flat pan there with a load of bolts round it. get a large container and remove all the bolts and allow the fluid to drain !!! WARNING USED TRANSMISSION FLUID IS BOTH CARCENAGENIC AND TOXIC remove the pan and really you should change the fitlers as well, once all the fluid is drained remove the old seal and fit a new one and refit pan and torque bolts to the correct settings. when you fill the box use the correct fluid and follow the manufacturers process for checking the level as many different methods are usedHow do i change my transmission fluid in my ford galaxy?
I don't know much about the Galaxy but Ford doesn't normally fit a gearbox drain plug. I think the gearbox would have to be removed in order to drain the lubricant. This should be done by a really experienced fitter, preferably a Ford trained one. I would recommend you check my recommendation with Ford trained Fitter. He could certainly do the job for you but it would take quite a time which you would have to pay for...and the oil will be fairly expensive. Also you need to know why the mechanics you have asked are all saying %26quot;New gear box%26quot; It's unlikely they are ALL rip off merchants. Be aware that if a gearbox siezes at speed you will have a real problem on your hands in trying to control the car....depressing the clutch pedal is not a lot of help in such a situation! How do i change my transmission fluid in my ford galaxy?
Transmission service is certainly not as easy or straightforward as oil changes, but considering the frustration and inefficiency of a transmission that isn't operating properly and the jaw-dropping cost of a rebuilt unit, we'll happily walk you through how it's done.

Buy the appropriate fluid for the transmission. This is extremely important - do not attempt to fill the transmission with anything but what the manufacturer recommends. Buy more than you need just in case. We'll also need a filter and a new pan gasket. Tools vary from job to job, but a set of sockets, a variety of extension bars, and a universal joint (or %26quot;wobble drive%26quot;) will usually do the trick. You also may need a gasket scraper to clean the sealing surface of the pan and transmission case, and some solvent. Last but certainly not least, a large catch pan is required.

The type of fluid and filter change that we're about to show will replace only a portion of the system's fluid, and therefore is best suited to vehicles that are not long overdue for this type of maintenance. Before tackling this project, pull the transmission dipstick and perform a visual and olfactory check of the fluid's condition. A burnt smell or color indicates fluid that's far past overdue (or more severe problems), and it's recommended that the vehicle be brought to a service station for a flush of the transmission and cooler. If you do elect for a professional flush-and-fill, make sure that the filter is also replaced during the process. We prefer to perform this service on a regular basis (roughly every 25,000 miles), and therefore we don't worry about extracting every last bit of used fluid.

If your transmission pan has a drain plug, consider yourself lucky while you remove it to start draining the fluid. In this case, we're not that fortunate, so we start by breaking loose each of the pan bolts with the appropriately-sized socket. Don't remove any of the bolts at this time.

Often, it will be difficult to access one or more of the bolts, so a bit of creativity may be required. Don't rush things, because tough bolts only get that much worse if the corners get rounded off. In this particular case, a 3/8%26quot;-drive socket was too large to fit over the bolt head (the transmission mount was extremely close), so a slightly slimmer 1/4%26quot;-drive socket was used. .

Some transmissions will utilize the pan bolts to secure various brackets, especially for the shift cable. If that is the case, remove only those bolts, and move the offending components out of the way.

Once all of the bolts have been loosened, remove them, leaving one in place at each corner of the pan. Once this is done, pick a corner to drop first (the front right corner looked to be the best bet in our situation). Remove that bolt, and loosen the others as required to start draining the fluid. As you can see, the fluid will start leaking from almost around the entire pan, so a drain pan at least the size of Montana the transmission will need to be in place to catch all of it. Keep kitty litter handy to soak up any spills.

Once the flow of fluid stops, remove the remaining bolts and carefully lower the transmission pan. A substantial amount of fluid will still remain, so keep the pan as level as possible.

In my case, the filter is removed simply by pulling it down with twisting motion, being careful not to snag any of the wiring harness. Yours made be held on with a bolt. We'd also recommend not dropping it into the drain pan and splashing ATF.

Let the transmission drain for a while. The fluid that we recovered gets measured so that we know how much to add during the refilling process. We recovered five quarts, and added an estimated half-quart to this amount to compensate for what was spilled during the process.

Next, we clean out the pan. It's entirely normal to find a fair amount of sludge and other wear debris, but significant amounts of ferrous material may indicate problems. At this time, you may choose to install a drain plug kit, or fit an aftermarket pan that includes one (some aftermarket pans also increase fluid capacity).

Clean the sealing surface of the pan using some solvent (we used brake cleaner) and a Scotchbrite abrasive pad. If a cork gasket was previously used, it may be necessary to break out a gasket scraper, but be careful not to gouge the surface.

Place the new gasket in place. Also clean the transmission case, using extreme care not to damage the sealing surface or introduce dirt into the transmission internals.

Take note of the filter's seal. It's obviously ideal to remove the old seal from the transmission if it didn't come out when removing the filter, but don't attempt this unless you're sure that you can remove it without damaging the transmission. While they usually pop out with ease, we've run into a couple of them that have been stuck in place and have added significant time to the project. If in doubt, leave the old seal in place, because once it's been damaged by a ham-fisted removal attempt, there is not other choice but to change it out. Tap the new seal into place using a soft-faced mallet.

Gently press the new filter into place. Make sure that it is fully seated.

Gently lift the pan into place while attempting to keep the gasket lined up properly. This may take a few attempts. Install the pan bolts and snug them up, but don't tighten them yet.

Next, torque the bolts to the correct value (22 ft-lbs in this case). If no tightening pattern is provided in your service documentation, simply go around the perimeter of the pan.

Before crawling out from under the vehicle, it's not a bad idea to clean off the exhaust if you've dripped fluid onto it during this process, or else you may get an unpleasant surprise shortly after starting it for the first time.

The correct amount of fluid is used to fill the transmission through the dipstick tube. We then start the engine, shift through each of the gears, and check the fluid level according to the manufacturer's recommendations (according to the dipstick, it should be done in Park and with the engine running and car level). In this case, there are two ranges marked on the dipstick - one each for %26quot;hot%26quot; and %26quot;cold%26quot; - and so we don't need to warm up the transmission completely to perform a preliminary check. Once we verified that it was in the ballpark, we went for a drive to warm the trans to its normal operating temperature before we made a final observation of the level and checked underneath the vehicle for any leaks.

Since we're filling the trans through the dipstick tube, any pooling can hinder our efforts in obtaining an accurate fluid level measurement. Therefore, it's important to be patient while verifying that the transmission is indeed properly topped-off, as underfilling or overfilling may result in severe damage. Checking transmission fluid levels can be a significant challenge, which is why many manufacturers have removed the dipstick entirely in favor of measuring the fluid level electronically.

The old transmission fluild should be recycled, of course. Our local recycling center simply mixes it with waste oil, but you'll want to check with your location to see what should be done with it as to avoid contaminating a large amount of recycled material. At this time, we're unaware of any efforts to recycle automatic transmission filters, so we let the part drain for at least 24 hours and then dispose of it.

to answer your question, start the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature, raise the vehicle, while the engine is still running remove the fluid checking plug. It's a small metal pipe plug. Fluid will run out if it's overfull. If it's low on fluid, add fluid to it until it runs out of the plug hole. To change the fluid and filter, you must remove the trans pan and allow all of the fluid to drain out. It should have a reusable pan gasket.

Now, if your engine is knocking, chances are you don't need to change the trans fluid. Save your time and money. Take it to a reputable repair shop to have them diagnose the noise. How Do I change my Transmission fluid on my 2000 pontiac grand am 2.2L twin cam?

Your tranny shouldnt knock if your low on oil. It will slip and go lose gears. How Do I change my Transmission fluid on my 2000 pontiac grand am 2.2L twin cam?
I doubt that the trans is causing the knocking, but if you want to check the fluid, there is a screw in plug in the front of the trans with an 11mm head. It's near the coolant lines.Unscrew it and see that the fluid is at that level,if not then pour some into the top of the trans by unscrewing the plastic cap.If you want to change the fluid, disconnect one of the coolant lines to the radiator and start the engine,it will pump itself dry.

I replaced my trans and rear differential with synthetic at 30k miles. My advice: change it. Spend a few bucks for the peace of mind.2002 Subaru Impreza WRX - How often to change the transmission fluid?
The differential oil on the rear wheel should replace roughly when you replace the timing belt.

For the clutch/transmission fluid, change it around 90k. However, it will depend how normal you drive the car or abusively driving (daily driving = normal; racing each other or drive fast = abusively).

Also, you can take out the dip stick of the transmission fluid, if it is still red-ish brown, you should be okay, if you have dark brown (like soy sauce, for example) you may need it to have it change.

BTW, make sure you bring it to the dealership to replace it....I found out that some no-experience mechanics will drain and fill which cause future problems....The dealership has a machine to maintain the existing fluid while adding the new fluid in....2002 Subaru Impreza WRX - How often to change the transmission fluid?

How much should it cost to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner? How about the Fuel Injecti

Our 2000 Toyota 4-Runner needs the 120,000 mile service. The Toyota dealership is trying to charge like $500. I'm trying to figure out the cost of the different services and decide which ones I actually need to do.How much should it cost to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner? How about the Fuel Injecti
I perform fuel injection cleanings and transmission fluid and filter changes on a regular basis. Although I think $500 is way too high, I also think some of the prices being provided to have both professionally done are unrealistic. If you are going to have the transmission service done, do it right and clean out the pan, the magnet and replace the filter. I have seen chunks and globs of sand-like goop come out of pans and filters. Also you get what you pay for with fuel injection cleaning. I have the rather expensive equipment to do the job right at the rail with a concentrated cleaner, under pressure and disabling the fuel injection system. I have performed these services on 4 Runners and they use Banjo bolts at the rails and few, if any, cheap setups will ever be able to attach to the rail.

My advice is get the transmission service done properly and wait on the fuel injection cleaning. $150-$200 is not unrealistic to the have the transmission service done properly. The actual labor time to do the complete transmission service is 2.8 hours because it is not as simple as some would have you believe. More importantly, make sure the correct ATF fluid is used if you go to an independent. Toyota has a specific fluid (Toyota Type T-IV) that should be used. There is also a TSB (TC001-02) about it. Most times there is a difference between having a job performed cheap or having it performed properly. I hope this helps. How much should it cost to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner? How about the Fuel Injecti

well a tranny flush should only be around 150 well it is where i work as for the fue injection its nothing to change all that happens is the mass air flow sensor gets cleaned throtle body gets cleaned and a can of cleaner that is safe for the injectors gets dumped in with your gas and it works up to 4 fill up on cleaning the injectors so the 500 is about right for everything the trainny flush and fill and the cleaning but if the 500 is just for the flush then would take i to someone elseHow much should it cost to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner? How about the Fuel Injecti
if all it needs is transmission fluid changed, meaning draining it out(just like an oil change, remove bolts, then remove the transmission pan after you drain it, has about 10-20 bolts that need removed, replace the old gasket seal(clean the old seal off the pan, make sure rim of pan and where it attaches too the vehicle is clean and dry, clean the pan itself out with a solvent to get sediments out too). if you can do this, having the right gasket(need all the vehicle specs for auto parts store). its a matter of draining, cleaning old seal off, put new on and put the pan back on the vehicle. your done. call auto parts store for parts and prices, and also see if they can tell you the size of the transmission fluid bolt that you have remove to drain it with to get the right socket. have year, make model engine size, and auto or standard transmission info

on hand when you call. you may be looking at no more than 100.00 if that, if you can do this yourself.

pick up drain pan, to make sure of safe and easy clean up.

as far as a fuel injection needing cleaned its a matter of spraying cleaning from a can to clean them, you can also put fuel injector cleaner in your gas and SAVE money. they charge you rediculous amount to spray your injectors, this way is cheaper and does the same thing. good luck

There is a drain plug on the trans oil pan, warm the trans up first an then just remove the plug just like a oil change.

You fill it through the trans tube, where the dip stick is.

Usually takes 3 Qts depends on how long you let it drain.

Make sure you get a new gasket for the drain plug.

Check the fluid level when in park and level, trans must be warm to get a proper reading.

Do not over fill it is just as bad as under filling.

First off, how many miles? If you are doing routine maintenance by the book, meaning going by exact miles to do fluid change, then yes its worth doing the flush and fill. If you have gone over the desired mileage for fluid change,(10,000 or so) LEAVE IT ALONE, do not change the fluid. You will lose the tranny eventually. Dont even change the filter.

Unfortunately, he is correct. If you have never changed it before, I would do it a couple of times at 5000 mile intervals, then every two years or 25,000 miles. NEVER let them flush the transmission, as this will stir up debris that will ruin an automatic transmission VERY quickly. How often should I change my transmission fluid in a 2001 Honda Accord?
The mechanic is correct. Not all of the ATF will drain out because most of it is in the torque converter. You will probably get less than one third of the ATF out with a drain. You can probably get more out with a hand pump-style fluid extractor. I recommend fluid drain and fills every 30,000 miles. You'll have a lot of old fluid in there, but that's ok, because some of it will be replaced regularly. Make sure to use the proper spec ATF for the fluid - if it says to use Honda ATF Z1 or whatever, find a suitable replacement fluid, because Honda transmissions require special fluids. I recommend drain and fills only, not flushes. How often should I change my transmission fluid in a 2001 Honda Accord?

add fluid, let it run for a while n' check for leaks.

if you want to do a complete flush you can buy trans fluid in gallon jugs, and pull both the lines off the cooler, and put hoses on them, put the intake hose into the new fluid, and the other one into a empty jug, then start the car and let it drink the new fluid, but remember to keep a very close eye on all this. How do i change the transmission fluid in a 99 chevy malibu?
you have to flush the transmission, in the long run it would be cheaper and faster to take it to a shop it will run you around 50$ and it will be done right.

If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?

It holds 8 quarts total. With my car I can remove the transmission drain plug to drain 3.5 quarts easily. The torque converter holds lots of fluid though. If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?
Theoretically it would never happen, but there is a way to get most of it changed. It involves changing the fluid in the pan, and once this is done, disconnect the fluid cooler line going to the radiator. Attach a piece of tubing to it and put the end in a suitable catch container. With the engine running and the transmission in drive, catch the fluid as it is pumped out of the transmission, and at the same time pour fluid into the transmission fill tube, until the fluid coming from the tube is clear and new looking. Read about the procedure at: http://www.allpar.com/eek/atf.html (About the center of the page) Don't forget any of the safety procedures. I used the procedure on a 1981 Ford F100 and it worked great. ...Good Luck..If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?
You'll never actually replace all the fluid this way. Imagine changing 1/3 of your oil at a time. There will always be some residual old fluid. Don't forget that most automatic transmissions also have a filter that needs replacing, too. If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?
it will never get new cause you'll be contaminating the new fluid with the old each time so if there's any particles there which is usually the case they're gonna stay there even if you drain the tranny the torque converter still has fluid in it son go to a shop and let them do a flush its the only way that fast and safe to change your transmission fluid

How do I change the transmission fluid in my V70 R, 2004?

Do I have to pump into the transmission? or just refill it?How do I change the transmission fluid in my V70 R, 2004?
You didnt mention if its a manual or automatic trans. If its an automatic you can just drain and refill it sounds easy right ? Heres the ins and outs of it, first you MUST use special volvo synthetic trans. fluid available only at your dealership and it is very expensive, Use a 15/16's wrench to remove drain plug on bottom of trans. When its time to refill the trans. you fill it thourgh the dipstick tube wich is kinda hard to get to and your gonna need a very long skinny funnel. I highly recomend catching the drained fluid into something that you can measure, this way you add just that much of new fluid back, it is very easy to overfill as the synthetic fluid level fluctuates a great deal from hot to cold. If you just drain and fill this is gonna be anout 4 liters, this is a problem as the transmission actually holds about 12 liters of fluid so you cannot get it all out with a drain and fill You must do whats called a trans. flush wich I would leave up to your local dealership, its too much to get into here. If you have a manual trans. just leave it no need to service this, besides i once seen an independent shop remove what they thought was the fill plug, it was actually not and it caused something inside to fall apart. You have a bueatiful car, let the pro's do it right !How do I change the transmission fluid in my V70 R, 2004?
first have you dropped it ? I'm not familiar with the car you are talking about but if it has a drain plug then there should be a filler hole somewhere on the transmission. Now if that's the case then fill till fluid comes out the hole. some transmissions require you too unbolt the sump and drain it that way and if it has a dipstick that's where you fill it back up again down the dipstick pipe remember check transmission fluid when the engine is running

Thanks:)How do I change the transmission fluid on my 2007 Honda Civic?
I wouldn't be in a big hurry about it. check your owners amnual for interval - some manufacturers don't even recomend changing Auto trans fluid. 2007 isn't very old.

Auto trans fluid is pumped thru the radiator (seperate cooler inside). Remove either of the hoses and point it into a bucket. put a hose on the fitting you took it from, and point it into the bucket, too. Weight them down, they'll spray like a garden hose.

start engine, run it until fluid stops spraying. add 2.5 or 3 quarts and repeat. after about 11 quarts, fluid coming out will look new. Make sure to use the right kind of ATF- owners manual. No need to put it in gear.

The transmission has a built in pump. even when it stops spraying, its still plenty oily inside to not hurt anything. I've done this dozens of times

How do you change the transmission fluid on 99' BMW 323i?

honestly you shouldnt change it, most of the times a transmission is serviced after so long it will start slipping to the point you need a new one.

but anyways back to your question. you dont really need the plug just take all bolts of the transmission but two. one on each side then slowly end evenly remove them with a oil pan already inplace to collect the oil, then when the pan is off remove the filter. clean the inside of the tranny. on the oil pan there should be at least one magnet that is used to collect small metal shavings, clean these then replace your filter follwed by the pan with newly installed gasket and bolt it up using only your hands then at the end use a ratchet to finish it off but dont bolt them up to tight or you would warp your new gasket. How do you change the transmission fluid on 99%26039; BMW 323i?
Do not be fooled into believing that there is a universal trans fluid. Go to BMW, and buy only the genuine BMW trans fluid, bottle by bottle. Also, most German automatics have a drain plug on the torque converter, to insure that 90% of the trans fluid is removed. Some of the German automatics use a fluid that is gold in color, based on synthetic mineral oils. BE VERY CAREFUL. If you are in doubt, have the dealership do this job for you. I am assuming that your car is an automatic. Only use genuine BMW trans filters and gaskets. Anything else is a waste of time and money!!! Good Luck!!How do you change the transmission fluid on 99%26039; BMW 323i?
It's easy as 1,2,3 for me anyways. All did on my manual transmission on my 01 330xi was drain and refill check bavauto.com under their newsletter, they have a DIY for it (do it yourself). I filled my with oem fluids that I got from the dealership. For and automatic you would just need to replace the transmission filter, so it's just an extra step. And yeah don't believe what bmw says about lifetime fluids, it should be change at around 70k miles.

How do i change my transmission fluid?

I have a 95 Ford Mercury Mystique, and I actually need to add Lucas Transmission conditioner, to help with my gear slipping problem. I don't know where to find the dipstick.. is it the yellow one that seems to be underneath some other things? and i just use a funnel to put it in the dipstick hole, right? How do i change my transmission fluid?
Yup. That's the dipstick. Typically is IS yellow like you said, and should have a marking of a gear on it. On manual transmission automobiles you will not find a dipstick.

If it's been a while since your last tranny oil change go ahead and put fresh fluid in it, along with the lucas.

Good luck :)!How do i change my transmission fluid?
Yes,you are correct. How do i change my transmission fluid?
The lucas is a temporary helper. You should have your trans fluid changed, but ONLY if the fluid they are using conforms to the specifications listed in your OWNER's MANUAL FLUID SPECIFICATION SHEET. You must use fluid that clearly states on the label, %26quot;designed to met Ford spec's%26quot;. THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL TRANS FLUID. These fluids are car-maker specific. Remember that your torque converter holds at least 2-3 quarts of old, ineffective fluid. You will have to change the fluid 2-3 times to dilute down the %26quot;bad%26quot; stuff. I would only use Mobil One Synthetic trans fluid for Ford cars. It gets pricey because you will waste some of it. Be sure to change your filter, as well. Wash down the underside of the valve body with chlorinated brake clean. THis will dislodge potentially trapped clutch material that wanders around the trans cawe lloking for trouble. SEE??

It's not like it can hurt to change it every year!! I would say 3 years. It depends on of course how many miles you drive. But it should be about three 3 years!!How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
My cousin owns a transmission shop and he said to follow what the manufacturer says, but told me if you change it every 15k miles, most transmissions will last for a long time. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
put it more the better, the cleaner the fluids are the better the performance of your machine lol. the only time it hurts the vehicle is if you don't change it and you go about 100,000 plus miles then its better to leave that fluid in there, sometime in high mileage cars the only thing holding it together is that Dirty fluid. like the guy at the top said 25,000 or three years both good numbers wich ever comes first.

the more you change the fluids the better even little particls of dirt and debry can ruin everything, you would be suprised what can stop a tranny or a engine.

if you want your car or truck suv whatever to run forever change your fluids before they need to be changed. you will be suprised how long your vehicle can run i had a 1990 nissan maxima with 300,000 miles and its still going today and everything is original down to the starter, and it still dynod at my school at the stock hp and torque.

take it from me buddy if you can afford to change it every year do it.How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
me personally id change it every 30,000 you could get a year outta it but then you could also risk a chance of losing a transmission...preventive maintance is always a good idea....but then you could get lucky once a year but i wouldnt reccommend it...its your choice really...How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
25000 is good. You can run it a little longer if you use synthetic or add an aux. cooler. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
I aim for the 24,000 mile mark. Sometimes it goes a bit beyond but that is not so critical as how you drive it. Extreme heat or cold take a toll on transmissions. I highly recommend synthetic fluid, it stays clean longer. It will cost more than standard but you get a higher level of protection.

Pulling a trailer or driving in dusty dirty terrain will be reason to change more often. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?

VERY RELIABLEHow often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
My job is in heavy construction equipment and particularly hydraulic systems. You cannot keep hydraulics too clean, and that is all an automatic transmission control system is. No, oil does not wear out, but it gets dirty and the anti wear additives degrade.

Personally, I always add coolers to the transmissions, but I live in a hot area, and I do not like the standard filter, so WW Granger has a hydraualic filter, as does B%26amp;M, with replaceable spin on filters at 10 micron, or you could go to 3 micron. I add those to all my cars and change at 25,000 intervals. Personally, I cannot see the added benefit verses cost of synthetic over conventional. Have too much good luck with conventional oils. DO ADD a drain plug to your transmission pan, to make the job easier.

Ran the transmission in a K car over 275,000 miles and no failure ever. Have Suburban with the early 700R4 and HAD it rebuilt due to worry about it at 230,000 miles and the shop said he had NEVER heard of one at that mileage.

So my answer is YES, change it at 25,000 miles if you intend to keep the car a long time and don't forget the axle and power steering fluid.

Good LuckHow often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
the more often the better I guess. but you need to do the flush along with new filtr(s) I have a dodge ram and the book recomends 60000 for this service. Its expensive and well worth it as it is preventative maintenance. I have about 18,000 to go and I am currently saving money to have this done. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
The first place to look is in your vehicles owners manuel.Different vehicles have different schedules for changing your transmission filter and fluid.Use of vehicle can also effect how often if you have a truck and you use it for heavy work or are constantly towing a trailer every 20,000 miles would be a good time to change it.Different climates can also effect service intervals hot dusty desert verses a cooler non dusty enviroment. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
15K or every year (12 months) for severe duty, that is towing, mountain driving, stop and go, taxi, teen driver etc. most people and cars would benefit from a service sooner than later. For the majority of us 30K (2 years)would be adequate. Lets remember it is heat that kills hydraulic fluid performance, as the fluid degrades quickly and loss of lubrication will cause many problems. The modern automatic transmission/ transaxle needs protection from heat, and Chrysler had issues with airflow into the engine compartment. All chry.cars built after 1996 suffer from over temp. conditions, vans, and cars especially. BTW the intrepid class w/ 2.7L engines drop dead if synthetic oils are not used. Just ask an owner, they should have required this from day one. The engineers knew about this, but as usual Chry. bean counters figured it would be cheaper to deal with unhappy customers on a case by case basis rather than fixing the root cause, bad cooling due to lack of airflow. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
3 years or 30,000 miles is still the normal interval. if you change it once a year you may be wasting money, but you will have a transmission that will outlast most of the cars on the road. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?

How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?

I have a 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas and would like to know how to check the transmission fluid if it needs to be changed and how to add more if necessary. How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?
Start engine, keeping transmission in park. Open the hood.

Near the back of your engine bay (close to the bottom of your windshield) should be a dipstick, probably with a red handle. This is your transmission fluid dipstick. You may or may not have to flip the handle up to pull it out of it's tube.

Pull out the dipstick, near the end of it should be some hashmarked areas with %26quot;Full%26quot; and %26quot;Add%26quot;. If it's at or near full, leave it alone. If it's just below full, and your engine hasn't warmed up yet, leave it alone. If it's at Add, look into your owners manual to see what kind of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) your Jag requires. Purchase it at your local auto parts store or dealership, along with a small funnell.

Again, with the engine running and transmission in park, remove your transmission dipstick, insert the funnell, and SLOWLY add the correct ATF. Maybe a fourth of a quart between inserting the dipstick all the way in and checking the level. When it's within the %26quot;full%26quot; zone, close it all up, and pat yourself on the back for having done something that most Jaguar owners simply leave to their butlers to do.How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?

  • I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?

I was talking to a guy who claims to be a auto mechanic. He said i was ruining the parts int eh transmission by changing it every ten thousand miles! Please tell me something i don't know. How can I damage parts on the transmission when all I'm doing is draining the fluids and replacing the filter?I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
Waste of time and money. Nearly all late model cars use synthetic transmission fluid, that lasts at least 100,000 miles. Older cars that used %26quot;regular%26quot; trans fluid needed changing more often. It also depends upon how hard you work the transmission, like carrying a trailer, or carrying a full load inside the car/truck often. You risk more by changing the fluid more often, because it increase the risk that something can go wrong. Transmission fluids these days are nearly ALL car-specific. E.g., dexron-H is for honda, Dexron-T is for toyota. German cars use mineral oil based fluids that are synthetic. BE VERY CAREFUL about filter and fluid choices. READ the manual many times!!!I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
Changing the transmission fluid that often does more damage to the environment and your pocket book than anything else. Changing that often isn't going to harm the transmission, it's just wasteful. I have a 1993 Chevy 1/2T pickup. NEVER changed the fluid in 180,000 miles. NEVER had a problem either. I rest my case. My 1983 Suburban had 140,000 mi - never changed the fluid, never had a problem.

Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, not that of a mechanic. The mechanic is in it for the money. So is the manufacturer, but they are also in it for reliability and repeat customers.

However, if you do a lot of towing or steep mountain driving, then consider changing the fluid every 25,000 miles.I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
hi there no!!!! what you are doing want do any harm to your transmission it is just useless to do it . it is dangerous and it ruins transmission when you dont change your oil and filter for a long time and one day you decide it to do so ,all the mucky from oil deposit goes around in idraulic parts and that is it

ciaoI change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
    yes

you can damage the transmission, if you are going to change the transmission fluid has to be minimum 100,000 miles. or if the oil is loosing his color because the fluid color is red.I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
You cant damage the transmission with simply changing the fluid and filter unless you are doing something wrong in the steps to change the fluid and filter. Most manufacturers recommend on older vehicles every 30,000 miles. If you go to a shop they can flush the transmission which does a better job at cleaning everything out but it often uses about 10 to 17 quarts to flush therefore the high price.

If you change yourself you are simply draining and usually are replacing 4 to 5 quarts or so. Therefore more frequent drains are recommend but 30,000 miles is typical. If you are concerned about some sediment etc then change the filter every 10,000 if you like. Cheaper and that will provide you the extra protection you are seeking without the cost of the full fluid and filter.

The transmisson is filled in the bottom. You need a special fill nozzle hooked to a gravity feed bottle. Also you need a factory scanner or VAG-COM to watch the temperature of the trans fluid. After you drain the fluid, you fill it until trans fluid dribbles out. When the temperature of the fluid is 35 C, it should be dribbling out the level set hole. How do I change the Transmission Fluid in a 1997 volkswagon GL myself?

Yes, the ATF filter is inside the tranny. Are you having problems with your transmission?

It is a more advance maintenance job, than your regular oil filter change. You will have to open it from the bottom pan.

The manual does not even have it scheduled on the book that it needs replacement.

See link at the bottom to get more ideas. How do i get to and change the transmission fluid filter on a 2000 honda civic dx?
Drop the transmission and pop it open. The Automatic transmissions if equipped with a filter it will be an internal filter unlike manual transmissions like mine that don't even have one. You shouldn't worry about the filter unless you have problems, Auto tranny's are pretty complicated and any transmission you pull apart can be difficult to fix if you don't know what you're doing. Try doing some other maintenance like replacing the fuel filter, replacing/gapping new spark plugs, install some new plug wires, whatever routine maintenance you can think of.

I know what you mean though lol, sometimes I just wanna work on my car so I'll go and inspect and if I see even the slightest issue I'll replace the part or do whatever's needed. But a good thing to do whether or not you access the filter is to change the transmission fluid, a lot of people only change the oil so tranny fluid gets neglected.

How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

    Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

  • 1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?

    Hello,

I have a 1990 740 that has about 227,000 miles on it. Recently replaced the fuel pump and a week later, though it functions normally in the city, when I take the car onto the freeway, it will run in the overdrive gear instead of Drive.

I checked the relay behind the ashtray, it looks fine.

The mechanic where I usually take my car told me over the phone that it could be a kickback cable; however, when I looked in a Chilton service manual, there was no mention of a kickback cable anywhere.

If I change the transmission oil will that be a good start to eliminating my troubleshooting options? Can anyone explain to me the procedure for changing transmission oil? Is it just a matter of draining the fluid and replacing it?

Any other troubleshooting advise would help alot. Thanks.1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?
The overdrive relays are very problematic, as well as the kick-down cables. With the vehicle stopped you should be able to activate and deactivate the O/D relay, if it is sticking, try tapping on the relay while depressing the button, if it starts working, then the relay is bad. very very common!1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?

And that is the way it should work. Why do you see that as a problem? Once you are over a certain speed, it is supposed to shift into overdrive which also gives you better fuel economy.

    Change Transmission Fluid?

I bought a 1997 Ford F250 HD with a 7.3 powerstroke that had about 215k miles on it. the transmission sometimes shifts hard and i don't know if changeing the fluid might help . can anyone instruct me on changing the fluid on an E4OD. ( I know how to check the level)Change Transmission Fluid?
When changing the transmission fluid from just the pan, only a little bit of transmission fluid is changed. Change the fluid completely by doing a complete drain and refill. You can do this yourself at the radiator transmsison lines. Do a search on the web for transmission flush.Change Transmission Fluid?
changing the fluid and filter might help the shifting, especially if the filter is dirty.Change Transmission Fluid?
Don't mess with the fluid unless you know that it has been changed at 30th. mile intervals. If you change the fluid after all 215K miles you will mess up the tranny.

My Chrysler T&C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?

The dealership wants 129.99 and I don't want to pay that much.My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
Visit your Chrysler/Dodge dealer and have them flush the transmission. The dealer is the only place that will take of the tranny if their flush causes it to quit working. My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
Go to jiggy lube they will do it for about $80. You can do it ourself but you won't remove all the old fluid. Mybe just 2/3, Jiffy lube or a reasonable fax simily has a system that will flush the old fluid and replace it with new.My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
If the dealership is going to use a transmission fluid changing machine, the cost is worth it. If they are just going to drop the pan and change the fluid and filter you can probably get that done for half the cost. It is important to change all the fluid including the fluid in the converter. Some vehicles have a converter drain plug and some do not. Transmission fluid changing is a messy job, and you have to dispose of the fluid in an environmentally sound manner. If your converter does have a drain plug and you do have an hour to kill, get yourself a big drain pan and a case of trans fluid($25?). Drop the pan, change the filter($20?) Reinstall the pan with the new gasket, do not over tighten the bolts! Drain the torque converter, reinstall the drain plug. Put only five or six quarts in, start the car for 5-10 seconds then turn off again. Put 5 more quarts of the fluid in, start the car, checking the dipstick periodically after the 9th or 10th quart add more fluid till it's at the full hot mark, Check for leaks and road test the vehicle. Don't forget to check reverse. My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
It depends what they are going to do. If they drop the pan change the screen and then flush it with a machine than 129 isnt bad. If they are just going to flush t, which is the better of the 2, then that is too much. I do it at my shops for $89 on a chrysler. Just make sure wherever you take it they are using the right fluid. It should take ATF+3 or pennzoil makes a fluid called multi-vehiocle. Dont let someone do it and use regular dexron III.

When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?

I just bought a used 2006 Honda Accord Ex Coupe l4 with Auto. Trans.

It has 40500 miles on it. The Owner's Manual says to change the automatic transmission fluid initially at 60,000 miles for severe use, and every 30,000 thereafter. I don't drive that way, mostly just short trips to the local store and back, so when should the tranny fluid be changed under normal use? Also, is there a tranny fluid filter to be changed at the same time?

How many miles between engine oil and filter changes are recommended?

This is my first Honda. I used to be a GM car buyer.

    Thank You In Advance,

DaveWhen to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
I just hit 80k miles and am going to change the trans fluid for the first time. Make sure you spend the extra money and buy the official Honda Trans fluid for your car. Don't buy a substitute at the auto store. Honda's are extremely sensitive to the trans fluid formulation.

As far as engine oil, I try to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. A couple of times I didn't get around to it until 4 or 5000 miles - no big deal. The brand isn't that important in this case, just be sure to use the correct viscosity oil. Most of the newer Hondas require 5W-10 or 20. Check the sticker under the hood.

If you do reasonable maintenance like this and drive sensibly, most Hondas will last for several hundred thousand miles. However, Hondas are very fragile and do not hold up well at all under abusive circumstances. When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
Honda is correct, fluid should be replaced at 60k unless you drive under severe conditions, which includes short trips where the petroleum-based fluid doesn't heat up sufficiently to rid it of water and other contaminants.change it now and every 30k miles after that and don't listen to old school folks who never changed their atf- every manufacturer has recommendations on service intervals and you should follow them - it's cheaper than a transmission.and make sure you use honda atf, it's manufacturer-specific.When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
Transmission fluid doesn't wear out or get dirty under normal conditions. If you tow something heavy or got stuck and abused the tranny, and the fluid looks or smells burned, then change it. I have owned automatics of various makes for 40 years and never changed transmission fluid on any of them and only once had a transmission problem and that was on a 79 Chrysler with only 30,000 miles. My 06 Toyota has a band on the transmission dip stick stating that under normal conditions the fluid does not need to be changed. Honda is just appeasing its dealers so they can get the service work. Oil and filter changes make sense at 5000 miles unless you do a lot of short trip driving where the engine seldom gets fully warmed up. Then do them at 3000 miles. When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
congrads on the honda they are very dependable cars. ok i recomend that you sevice the transmission at 60 k and dont just change the filter and the 5 qrts go to a shop that has a machine to flush all the fluid. which is about 12 qrts and a filter, this is the best thing you can have done and make sure they use the correct fluid hondas are very picky when it comes to their fluids. as for the engine oil 3 months or 3 thousand miles. good luck and take care of your new ride

  • I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?

I wanted to disconnect the transmission line to the radiator, cut the car on, and pump out the old fluid. I did this on my '85 Buick and I haven't had any problems...can this method be sucessful on the Pontiac?I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I do it by getting a white 5 gallon bucket and marking the level on the side in 1 quart increments. Then you run the car till you've pumped 1 quart into the bucket, cut the engine, add a quart and do it again till you've replaced all the fluid.

The return line just dumps into the pan, so you need to drop the pan, clean it out and fill it with new fluid first. That will keep the new fluid from the flush from mixing with the old fluid in the pan.

Don't forget to plug the return line to the transmission while you're flushing. And make sure you disconnect the return line from the radiator to the transmission to put in the bucket so you flush the cooler out too.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I would think that as long as the car were in neutral, you shouldn't have a problem. However, there are things about that where I am unsure. Why not just drain the pan and replace the filter while you are at it?I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
you cant be serious... why would you even think of running a transmission dry of fluid... what do you think lubricates it? jeezI wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
sure.... lot of mess but yesI wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
Yes use a flush machine that's the trick.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I wouldn't suggest it. When you change the transmission fluid, it is just like changing the motor oil in the sense that your tranny has a filter just like your motor. When you change the fluid you need to change the filter also. To do this, you will need to drop the transmission oil pan to have access to the filter. Changing the fluid without changing the fluid is kind of pointless since your filter will get to the point where it can no longer filter out material and you will be pumping dirty fluid through your transmission.

Also it is not a smart idea to run your car and pump the fluid out, you could burn up your transmission and or torque converter.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
Put the tools down and slowly step away from the vehicle sir.

Take it to a shop and let a mechanic do it right. I'm sure you don't want to spend $2000 for a new transmission.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I understand what you want to do. Here it is, step-by-step. Includes dropping the pan, changing the filter, cleaning and reinstalling the pan and filling with fluid-- then having a partner start the engine to pump the fluid out of the the cooler line. The key is you add fresh fluid as the old is being pumped out-- the transmission never runs dry this way. http://www.amsoil.com/faqs/ATF_and_Filte

I did this when I switched to synthetic ATF. http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=14

Somewhat involved; messy, but not as messy as I thought it would be.

Easiest way to change transmission fluid?

I have 2 vehicles, 1 @ 52k miles (05 Sable), 1 @ 126k miles (02 Stratus), and the transmission fluid has never been changed in either one. I have never done this before, but I have enough know-how to figure it out. However, I do have some questions for someone with more experience than myself.

    1. I have heard that it is not wise to change the tran. fluid in the 126k car because it can cause stuff to fail due to the length of time it has had the same fluid in it. is this true?

    2. What is the easiest and/or best way to extract the transmission fluid and what tools do I need? (I have heard that sliding a tube through the dipstick tube and siphoning/pumping it out is the best way)

    3. Planning to switch to ROYAL PURPLE. Is there something better?

FYI, I can't afford to put these vehicles in the shop to have this done, and I want the best bang for the buck (thus the Synthetic fluid). Please gear the answers away from %26quot;just take them to the dealership.%26quot;Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
Servicing a transmission will not hurt it, people only say that because they notice the transmission acting up, then have it serviced just before it actually fails.

Using the wrong fluid can ruin a transmission.

Both vehicles would benefit more having the filter replaced as well (especially the higher mileage one).

The Stratus transmission pan is sealed to the transmission with rtv especially designed for this use, it will seem to be glued in place.

I take all but 2 bolts out leaving the last 2 slightly loosened and hit the pan from the side with a rubber dead blow hammer to break the bond, you will know when it is coming loose because it will start to leak (have a wide drain pan ready under it).

Make sure when you replace the filter that there is only one o-ring in place, also the transmission will continue to drip from the differential so it is best to let it set for awhile because you want a clean dry surface for the rtv to seal to when you put the clean dry pan back on.

Expect to use about 5q of atf +4 and recheck after you drive because the dif. will fill as slowly as it drained.

As for the Mercury, I'm not to sure about the quirks with that one.Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
1 the vehicle with 126,000 miles just drop the transmission fluid pan and install a new filter and that won't hurt it one bit, it will actually help it.

2 do the same with your second vehicle as your not going to get all the fluid out of the tranny as over half of the fluid is in the torque converter and there is no drain plug on the converter on most cars so your idea of adding synthetic fluid to it is also shot down as you can't mix synthetic with regular tranny fluid.Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
not wise to flush is wise to replace it but even then doesnt have to do it most cars if drove right 300,000 plus miles easy my car has over 380,000 never been touch yet

just drain it and replace filter all you really need better to have it done since its a mess

but its not hard just a few bolts

can suck it out but you cant replace filter

any type of fluid is fine but sure any Synthetic is better

and ever go to dealerships unless its free any shop can do just as good as a dealership plus cheaperEasiest way to change transmission fluid?
Don't laugh, but the easiest way is to drill a 3/16%26quot; hole at the low point of the pan to drain it out. It's easy to plug the hole afterwards with a 1/4%26quot; self tapping screw plus fiber washer (add a little lock-tite to be sure).Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
You %26quot;MIGHT%26quot; be okay with the 05 sable, but I wouldn't advise it. It's the fresh detergent in the new fluid that will retire the adhesive bonding the friction material to the clutch disks. I don't know why companies don't offer low detergent fluid, but they don't. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years, so I've seen this a hundred times.

Yes, the easiest and cleanest way to remove the trans fluid is through a small hose down the dipstick tube, but no matter what method you employ, you cannot remove the fluid (2%26amp;1/2 qts) in the torque converter. No matter how good the new fluid is it will be mixing with stuff that has 126000 miles on it. My advise is save your money, and don't even think of that crap in a can! Nothing can fix any damage that's already been done. Good luck!Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
FORGET Royal Purple. When you read the bottle, it actually has no recommended car-makers listed. It is NOT true that changing the fluid at high mileage will cause an instant melt-down. There are many variables involved here. The trans pan must be dropped to change the trans filter and pan gasket. Wash whateer you see with brake cleaner spray. This removes graphite (clutch droppings). CLean the bottom of the trans pan, re-install it, and top up the fluid. USE ONLY fluid that states %26quot;designed for use in Ford cars%26quot; in the sable. Use ONLY fluid that states %26quot;designed for use in Chrysler cars%26quot; in the other. REALIZE that your transmission holds MANY quarts of old fluid in the vlave body and in the torque converter. You can ONLY improve the concentration of old to new fluid by changing the fluid only. You MUST do a flush and fill afterwards. This requires expensive equipment to accomplish. CALL several dealerships to see if they are running specials on this service. They WILL use the proper fulids, and the proper techniques to get the job done CORRECTLY. PLUS, you will get a receipt with some kind of warranty on it. The only transmissions I know of that require only a fluid changing are in some Honda cars. Trans fluids today are car-maker specific. NEVER use a generic fluid. All later model cars use synthetic trans fluid from the factory. Dino based fluids are a thing of the past. When you do this job the right way, car neurosis is reduced. on the 126K leave it alone on the sable pull down trans pan stating at the pass side run up one side then the other leave the 4 bolts on the back end one at a time the fluid should be just starting to drain out if not use a screw driver and don't pry to hard and the pan will come down yes you might make a mess when down to last bolt try to hold pan and remove bolt at same time the pan gasket you see m should be black if it is it's a reusable gasket when you pull down the filter you will see a green boot stuck up it the opening that must come out you can use small screw driver to do this just make sure you do ot disturb any thing in that area the new filter will have the boot on it put a little oil on it and push it up in place clean all rust off the outside corners of the pan and put everything back as far as fluid use the ford fluid because you will not be able to get all fluid out of the trans because there is no way to get it out of the torque convertor still will be several quarts in there so you do not want two different fluids in the trans add 5 qts then start top off and recheckEasiest way to change transmission fluid?
    Here's the deal:

If the fluid is burnt (it will be brown) or has a lot of metal in it (when you wipe the dipstick on a paper towel there will be silver on the towel) then you need a rebuild, changing the fluid will cause it to slip.

To change the fluid, put the car on jackstands if it is to low to get under, then raise your floor jack just up to the bottom of the trans. oil pan (touching it, not exerting any force). Have cardboard under the car, this can make a big mess if it doesn't go well. Un-bolt it, SLOWLY let it down then grab it and dump it in your container (check again for metal). Then put a couple quarts in it, raise it back up, get it to be full then start the engine, get it warm and keep checking the fluid level and add as necessary.

As for switching the fluid, I'm not sure about what the procedure would be. I don't think it would be a big deal but I honestly don't know.

Hope this helps!Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
1 - Not true - check quality of trans fluid, at that mileage it will be dark already, fluid change will be good for it, (think about it, if its true, then when will it be changed). Just make sure to use same type and grade of fluid. Now the other car may still be good at 52k, check the fluid if its red or pinkish and is still very transparent then its still good.

2 - The best way is the only way I would recommend, put the vehicle on stands and go under, remove the drain bolt. This way you will get almost every single drop of the old fluid. Sliding a tube doesnt not work all the time, and still leaves some of the old fluid. Now for filling the trans fluid, its a little hard to use a pump from underneath, also you dont know if its full until it spills out of the fill hole which could be messy. You can use the dip stick tube to fill it up, it will be slow and you have to keep it in check how much you have put in and make sure not to overfill it.

3 - Royal Purple is great, but I tend to stick to what the vehicle manufacturer recommends. I find it overkill, unless its for high performance.
