Do you have to change the auto transmission fluid of Altima 2002?

when you have to do it, do you need if you have to change the filter too, and how do you do it??Do you have to change the auto transmission fluid of Altima 2002?
Yes, you should to change it about every 12 months. To do it you remove the bolts from the transmission pan. Leave the four bolts of the corners for last. Take these about half way out and then pry the pan from the bottom of the transmission, (if it doesn't come down on its own.) then, while holding the pan up with one hand, remove 3 of the remaining bolts. Tilt the pan down and use the corner opposite the remaining bolt to let the fluid pour into your drain pan. When you've gotten as much as you can out of the pan, push it back up and remove the last bolt and take it down. Doing it this way will keep you from taking a transmission fluid bath. Pour the rest of the fluid into the drain pan after you get out from under the car. Take out the filter. Some of them push up and are held in place by bolt, while others are held up by an o-ring on the outside of the tube and rest on the bottom of the pan. Clean out the pan with some break clean and a rag. Use your finger to put a light coat of grease around the rim of the pan where the gasket sits. This will stick the gasket to the pan while you put it back in place and, at the same time, avoid problems transmission fluid has of disolving silicone. Replace the filter. Hold the pan up in position and put in enough bolts in to hold the pan up. Replace the rest of the bolts and snug them up. Do not overtighten the bolts. This will cause the pan to be warped between the bolt holes and it will leak. Add the proper amount of fluid and check for any leaks. Start the car and warm it up. Go through all the gears and put it in park and check for leaks. If the pan is leaking then tighten the bolts up a little until the leaks stop. Be sure to check the bolts after a week or two to make sure the pan hasn't started leaking because of the compression of the gasket.Do you have to change the auto transmission fluid of Altima 2002?
you need to service the transmission every 30,000 miles, filter included, I would suggest taking it to a shop, they will be able to tell you if there is any preexisting problems, when they pull the pan, also if you do not put the gasket on right it will leak and if you overtighten the pan bolts it will leak and you may strip the bolt hole or twist off a bolt. it is nice to save money, but this could cost you more doing it yourself, compared to what a shop would charge youDo you have to change the auto transmission fluid of Altima 2002?
Read the owners manual. That's what it's for.Do you have to change the auto transmission fluid of Altima 2002?

2005 Honda Civic Transmission and Radiator Fluid Change?

I was told I needed Transmission Fluid and Radiator Fluid change..

How much would both of the cost ? and if I had to pick one to do right now and the other later which one should I have done tomorrow?

I have a 2005 Honda Civic little over 61,000 miles ..2005 Honda Civic Transmission and Radiator Fluid Change?
I would definitely change the transmission fluid.

At 60,000 miles it would be good to drain and refill it twice with a short drive in between to mix up the fluid. You might put off the cooling system but do it at least by this coming fall.

The reason is that the automatic tranny holds over 6 quarts but when you drain it only 2.9 quarts comes out. So to get out more of the old fluid you need to drain and refill it at least twice at your mileage. Use only Honda ATF fluid. Get it at the dealer or at a Carquest auto parts store. Cost is around $6.50 to $8 a quart. So doing it yourself will cost $40 to $50 for the fluid. Put a new washer on the drain plug as well.

Changing either of these will not make your car drive faster.

And DON'T flush a Honda transmission unless you are looking for trouble.2005 Honda Civic Transmission and Radiator Fluid Change?
Just because it's a Honda doesn't mean proper maintenance shouldn't be done. Sure, transmission fluid can last up to 90,000 miles but that's under %26quot;normal%26quot; conditions. If you do a lot of city driving, short trips and such or live in more extreme warm or cold conditions it is recommended you change the fluid more often. If you never changed the fluid my suggestion is to do it now. It should cost between $100 and $150 for a good flush of the system.

Same goes for the radiator fluid but should be changed even more so. If it's the regular green fluid (in which I think Civics use) the most I would go would be 2 years or 30,000 miles. A flush should cost around $80 to $100.

Honda's are good cars, but not that good to skip maintenance. If I were you I would try to get both done more sooner then later.2005 Honda Civic Transmission and Radiator Fluid Change?
its an 05 you wont need one of those for at least another 2 years, its a honda! its so easy to do on a Honda it shouldnt cost but 12 dollars and flud for the radiator. as far as the trans depends on the shop call around.

Did they change my transmission fluid?

I paid the local Acura dealership to change my transmission fluid at 60K, however, I have had a couple of oil change franchises state that I still need to have this done. That showed me the fluid on the dipstick placed on a white towelette. It appeared to be a rusty brown with a hint of purple. I know that most automatic transmission fluids are pink to magenta in color. Did they just park my car in the rear and call me later in the day? How can I know if they have actually did the work that I paid for? I now have 68K on the Acura TL.Did they change my transmission fluid?
The Acura TL transmission holds about 7 quarts of fluid, when you drain it only about three quarts will drain out, to really get a fluid change you need to drain three quarts, re-fill it, drive the car for about ten minutes, cycling through all the gears, come back, drain three quarts, re-fill it, drive the car for about ten minutes, come back, drain three quarts, re-fill it, and then it will be about 95% changed. I doubt any dealer would actually go through the whole process.

NEVER EVER have the TL transmission power flushed, it will cause more problems than the transmission ever had.Did they change my transmission fluid?
transmission fluid is redish brown after you have drove it even with fresh oil it does stay bright red but a day or two if you have had it change any time you done all you need really only needs it once or twice in a life time of one many auto companies say 60,000 100,000 miles or more before it needs it most likely they just want your money dont need it done but ever 10 yrs or so if any truth is most transmission will how last the motor even without changing it.. ive been driving over 40 yrs and ive own many a car and ive never replace trans fluid in any car and never had one go out from lack of itDid they change my transmission fluid?
hard to tell but if fluid is dirty already it don't sound like they changed itDid they change my transmission fluid?
It is possible to cheat you but not worth the trouble.

It is worth it to the other changers to sell you another change.Did they change my transmission fluid?

  • How do I change the Transmission Fluid on a 96 2.4L Dodge Stratus?

I actually know how to change the transmission fluid but the real question that I have is do I need to put in a new filter and gasket. I got the car right before winter ended with a new used transmission in it. I drove it until now which is september and put probably under 10,000 mi on it. About a month ago I had a transmission slip so I put some fluid in it (around a half of a quart) and it has shifted great ever since. Here is the problem, the fluid that I put in the car was Dextron 111 which I now know is a big NO. At the time I didnt know this. I recently have had an error code 72 come up which either means catalytic converter failure or the transmission will go out. This is why I want to Change out the fluid before something bad happens. With so few miles on it do I have to change the filter and gasket? Also how many quarts of fluid...I heard that it is around 10How do I change the Transmission Fluid on a 96 2.4L Dodge Stratus?
Total fluid Replacement will take that trans a long way, as anyone will tell you, heat kills. this is especially important with the 41TE automatic transaxle. The fluid tends to break down rapidly and will cause issues with seals and clutches, especially in the torque converter.

It's good practice to replace the filter at least every 60K miles.

After replacing filter (some residue is normal, be suspicious of metalic debris). reseal the pan (some have reusable gaskets) fill the trans and drive it a few miles to bring the trans to operating temp.

Then disconnect the cooler lines and purge the trans of the remaining fluid, while adding fluid thru the dipstick, to maintain a supply for the pump to operate. after you have added and recovered about 6-7 quarts(the more the better), shut the engine off and reconnect the lines, refill the trans and your done. This replaces 99% of the fluid and is exactly what the dealership or shop will do, (except they use a pump to supply the trans with fresh fluid thru the disconnected cooler line)How do I change the Transmission Fluid on a 96 2.4L Dodge Stratus?
4 quarts since you just change what is in the pan, also the filter when pan is off,it is cheap so just replace it.How do I change the Transmission Fluid on a 96 2.4L Dodge Stratus?
if you let that one drain for a while you need to have 5 quarts on hand when you change that, or you may find it to be a little low,and change the filter on it their not that expensive to replace, never drop a pan and not change the filter on it,your only asking for problems if you do that, good luck.

about every 20,000 miles depending on the makeHow many times do i have to change my transmission fluid?
Manual: Most manufacturers recommend that manual transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Under heavy-duty use, some manufacturers suggest changing transmission fluid every 15,000 miles.

Automatic: Service intervals for an automatic transmission vary from every 30,000 miles ... to never. The typical service interval is 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Changing it more often does no harm. How many times do i have to change my transmission fluid?
READ YOUR OWNER%26quot;S MANUAL!!!!! It will tell you in the maintenance schedule. Also, today's cars have SPECIFIC trans fluids that must be used with SPECIFIC characteristics. VW/Audi, for example, have gold colored mineral oil for trans fluid. Ask your question at the dealership that carries YOUR kind of car to get the right answer. All cars are NOT the same!!! There is NO universal trans fluid, either! How many times do i have to change my transmission fluid?
Two years or 30,000 miles is about as long as I'd trust a batch of transmission fluid.

The traditional method of changing fluid - dropping the pan and refilling - doesn't change all of it at once, but if your fluid is off-color, you probably don't want to change all of it at once.

How much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. It has 102,000 miles on it and I'm wondering roughly what it should cost to have the spark plugs replaced and have my transmission fluid and filter changed. I live in LA.

ThanksHow much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?
Josh didn't mention changing his transmission filter so, add about $20 or so.

Yes, you %26quot;have%26quot; to have the plat. plugs or else your Check Engine light will come on.

The Plat. plugs are also why you got 102k out of your first ones.

Not sure about the LA area but, 6 plugs at about $15 a piece is normal - plus labor if a garage does it.

[Plus beers, if I do it... :) ]

[[Correction, %26quot;plus beers as I watch you do it and I supervise.%26quot;]]

Total should be less than $200 if you do it. $325ish if done at a shop. How much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?
Considering, it's a 2002 with that many miles i would also have the spark plus wires replaced. Get the platinum spark plugs.

I had my done by the dealer for about 85 dollars.

Also, I changed the fluid myself. The fluid is expensive for this car type. You need type IV.

I used Castrol and it took 4 quarts costing 6 bucks a piece.

So your looking at about 125-150 bucks if you do the tranny fluid yourself.

Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?

I've got a few questions about cost for maintanence on my older Saturn. And I go to a local garage.

How much to change the transmission fluid? I've also heard differing opinions on that. Some say it'll mess up your car and don't do it. Others say it's just as necessary as changing the oil.

How much to get a coolant flush done?

And how much for a tune-up and what should be involved in a tune-up?Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?
Trans fluid needs to be flushed every 60,000km. Not changed, flushed.

People are right when they say it can do more harm than good

but thats only when you havent been doing your regular fluid changes

on the transmission, say you never done one in 100,000km.

    Coolant flush around 80-100 bucks.

Tune up is usually spark plugs , air filters, tire pressures, small work.Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?
don't have it flushed unless you want problems, just have the garage drop the transmission fluid pan and change the transmission filter and bolt back up and refill with new fluid, about $60 to $75.

How to change the automatic transmission fluid in a Chrysler 300m?

can someone help how to do that? i searched the internet and could not find anything. how many liters would be necessary?thanksHow to change the automatic transmission fluid in a Chrysler 300m?
It's really not a job for anybody that hasn't done it before or at least hasn't changed a oil pan gasket etc before but you can get service manuals that will help you out in doing the job.

No1You have to jack up the vehicle and place it on stands , then apply the emg brake, open the hood then go under the vehicle and unbolt the transmission pan%26quot;note on some vehicles there might be pieces of the cross member or frame support etc that might have to be removed first to gain access to the pan fully%26quot; drain the fluid into a proper container

    No2 pop out the filter

No3 you have to clean the pan and scrape off the old gasket from the pan too

No4 make sure the surface that the pan attaches to on the transmission is clean

No5 make sure that surface and the pan are shiny clean and fully dry and the bolt threads are clean and dry too

No6 pop in the new filter

No7 place the gasket around the pan and place the pan up to meet the transmission and install the bolts while you hold the pan in place but don't fully tighten any yet just install bolts across from each other first and hand tight. It's best to have a torgue ranch so you can use the manual to find out the specs and tighten the bolts accordingly

No8 once the bolts are all in and tight remove rejack the vehicle , remove the stands , release the emg brake

No9 use a funnel and add the fresh proper factory recommended transmission fluid and amount to the transmission

No10 check the fluid level and check the vehicle's transmission shifting, plus look for any leaks , test drive it.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way a service manual is really vital here or knowing the proper specs, plus having a helpful helper would be good too but really for the amount of work involved here it might be best to spend the 100 bucks or so to have a pro do the job.

Does anyone know where I can find the drain plug? If possible, could anyone give me links to sites that tell how to change the transmission fluid in my eagle vision.Transmission fluid drain plug in 1997 eagle vision?
I don't believe this pan has a drain plug. Loosen all the bolts and loosen the pan w/ a putty knife. Then slowly lower the pan at one corner to allow the fluid to pour out into a drain pan. Once most of it is gone you can handle it and not spill it all over the place.Transmission fluid drain plug in 1997 eagle vision?

Changing the transmission fluid on a 98 chevy silverado.?

I need to know how to add tranny fluid to a 98 chevy silverado. The dip stick says there is nothing in it, but I cant find a place to pour more fluid in. Can anyone help with this? I also need to know how to change it again, once I have it back home (filter, getting the fluid out, etc.) Any help you can provide would be great. Changing the transmission fluid on a 98 chevy silverado.?
You fill it through the dip stick tube.there's a special funnel you use, there cheap at any auto parts store. to change the fluid %26amp; filter you have to remove the transmission oil pan. not hard but messyChanging the transmission fluid on a 98 chevy silverado.?
You have to get the black funnel from walmart or the auto parts store that fits down the trans fluid dipstick tube and pour the trans fluid down the dipstick tube, then to drain it, you will need an oil pan and unbolt the back of the trans from the frame cross memeber, you will see it, then jack up the trans so that you can acces the rear bolts on the bottom of the trans fluid pan, then u have to take the trans fluid pan off, leve it a few hours so that the torque converter can drain properly, then re fill it, and you will be good to go, the best way to do this procedure is get a Haynes manual from the autoparts store and it tells u how to change the trans fluid.Changing the transmission fluid on a 98 chevy silverado.?
you use a funnel and add to where the dipstick comes out. to get the fluid and filter out is a bit of a project. i have done several over the years. that should be a 700 r4 transmission. the cross member needs to be disturbed to remove the pan and you need to be prepared for a mess if you have never done it before.

How do you change the fluid in your transmission?

I was just wondering because I don't want to have to go to the shop for that kind of thing and be charged up to wazzu for getting that done. How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
if it has a drain plug then drain n fill. i'm thinking you have an auto trans. if no drain plug in pan then pan has to be r and r'd. there is also a filter that will need to be changed. if it is a screen then just clean it. now either way you will not get all the fluid. so i recommend smelling the fluid before you start. if it is dark and strong odor then you need to completely flush the fluid, if it's still pinkish and no strong odor then drain n fill. to flush at home can be tricky and messy. find cooler lines (to and from rad) need to test for tranny inlet line. the line from rad. will squirt when disconnectedand nothing comes out trans where line was removed. here is tricky part. you will need a container like 5 gal. paint pucket and attach hose from rad. outlet line so it will lay in bucket. 5 gal. bucket number 2 you will pour in 8 quarts of new fluid and attach hose to trans inlet and run it to bottom of bucket 2. start engine in neutral and verify flow. run til fluid coming out is clean or 8 qt. supply gets low. once you have clean output shut off and reinstall cooler lines then restart in neutral at normal engine temp. and fill to full line. that will even fix shudder and minor slip problems in most transmissions. after all that i rec. having your dealership do it. the fluid stinks bad when burnt, hard to dispose of, stains anything the fluid touches, and you can't screw up or you'll burn up tranny. i used to flush the front wheel drive trannys before they came out with the flush machines. now all dealerships are required to have them. How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
i dont change anything in my transmissionHow do you change the fluid in your transmission?
the whole pan and filter drops off the bottom of it.

fairly simple proceedure..... a little more time than changing engine oil.How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
it depeneds on the make some transmissions are a sealed unit therefor u cannot change the fluid. Depeneds on the make u can get a tranny servive for about 80 bucks that 80 bucks will save u about 2 grand, tranny services are a over looked thing but very beneifical to the long life of your vehicle. most tranny services you unbolt the trannt pan replace the filter and the seal an dreplace the fluid, start the vehicle hold the brake an dlet run in all gears to lube them. GOOD LUCKHow do you change the fluid in your transmission?
It's a messy, nasty job, and I suggest you just go to the Oil Change businesses around and let them do it. It costs about $60. And they have the special machinery to make sure it is completely changed.

But why would you want to?? Most cars never get changed. I think the recommended interval is about every 100,000 miles, and I don't even recommend doing it then. If its working right, just let it be.How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
Many Japanese auto manufacturers install a drain plug on the tranny pan. This allows drainage of several quarts of fluid, the same as pulling a pan off an American car, but not near as messy, and you don't have to worry about leaking pan gaskets.

I drain mine, refill it, the drain and refill again after I drive it several days, This gets the new fluid mixed in with the old, as you can't get the fluid out that's in the torque converter, radiator, and passages of the tranny just doing a regular drain.

Doing it twice gets a high percentage of new fluid in though. How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
So, it's time to change your fluid. Many people are reluctant to change thier fluid because they think it costs to much to service a transmission. At my shop, we charge from 90.00 to 150.00 CDN

for most vehicles. Some German cars are more because the fluid alone is 25.00 to 30.00 CDN per litre. The truth of it is, a transmission is cheaper to service than your engine....look at it this way !!!! Example using a 2000, Plymouth Voyageur that uses ATF+ 4 transmission fluid. In this vehicle, service intervals are approx. 80,000 kms for the transmission and 5000 kms for the engine. After 80,000 kms, the engine oil would have been changed 16 times at about 30.00 each. That's 480.00 for engine oil changes VS 150.00 for the 1 transmission service !!!! By comparison, thats not much at all. Unfortunatly, I've seen do it yourself tranny services that caused failure of the transmissions, Why? Using the wrong parts. Example, there are 3 different filter, and 3 different pans/pan gaskets for the Ford Taurus transmission and they MUST be used correctly. Alot of the Quick Lube places aren't aware of these minor differences and often put on the wrong parts. This scenario also applies to other models of transmissions as well. Same model transmission can come with different pan/filter combinations !! Do you really want to run the risk of this happening just to save a few bucks????

Bite the bullet, spend the bucks and get your transmission serviced by a professional !!!!How do you change the fluid in your transmission?
you will need to drop you tranny pan to replace the filter. it will make a big improvementHow do you change the fluid in your transmission?
you need to get a new trany filter and gasket for your year and make of car first then loosen trany pan drain fluid remove pan remove filter clean pan and gasket surfaces install new filter install new gasket and pan do not overtighten pan bolts about 15 footlbs pressure is enough refill fluid to full leval run car till warmed up and check fluid leval again

also coolant. when shoudl i change that? Thank you SOOOOO much for your helpChanging transmission fluid on a 2006 toyota corolla myself HELP!!!?
Your vehicle takes Toyota Type T-IV transmission fluid. It is very, very important that you use this fluid only. To start out, I'd recommend that you buy 4-5 quarts of this fluid, as well as a new transmission drain plug gasket. They can be easily and cheaply obtained from the dealer. Underneath your vehicle, if you look at the bottom of the transmission you will see that transmission drain plug. This plug requires a hex socket (10mm to be specific), and looks like a regular bolt head turned inside out. Removing that plug will allow the transmission fluid to drain. Once the fluid is done draining, replace the gasket with the one you purchased, and tighten the plug. Add 3 and 1/2 quarts of fluid, start your vehicle and allow it to warm to operating temperatures. Check the level of your fluid once it has warmed up, aiming to have the level within the %26quot;hot%26quot; range on the dipstick. Typically, 3 and 1/2 will put you right there, but it is important to check nonetheless. This is the simplest form of transmission fluid service, the more complicated requiring a flush machine to perform.

Toyota Type T transmissions, especially Corollas are notorious for the fluid turning dark at early mileage. For what type of tranny fluid and how much, look in you service manual. Should be located in your glove box (if it hasn't been moved).Changing transmission fluid on a 2006 toyota corolla myself HELP!!!?
If the car only has 30k miles on it and the trans fluid is black I would take it to the dealer and have them check it out under warranty. Black fluid means burnt clutches.

If the car is in good shape. Get a Chilton's or Helms service manual for your car from the auto parts store. You should only need to get an alignment if the car pulls in any direction or your tires have a bad wear pattern.

Fuel filter should also be changed.

Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?

I'm thinking about changing the transmission fluid on a 1990 Pontiac Bonneville, through the pan... as the seal needs replaced. However, I don't know how much transmission oil to put back in. It says it takes 6 qts. for a fluid and filter change... but that it will need 11 qts. if the torque converter is changed.

Also, what kind of seal do I use on the gasket? Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
it wont all drain, but over all you will get enough out of it to be ok for a fluid change, as long as you are not changing it to clean the system out...

ive taken the line off of the tranny cooler, started the car, and let it pump itself out while filling the dipstick tube, worked well for meWill draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
if you have the front end raised then part of the fluid from the torque converter will drain out too.don,t fool with the seals if they are not leaking besides to replace the front seal you have to pull the transmission. yours probably takes the same as my 88 oldsmobile. mine took about 7 quarts. most of the gaskets you buy don,t require any sealer. if they have them ask for the rubber gasket. when you get ready to fill it let your car down and fill it to almost the full mark on the stick, start your car and let it idle on its own, hold your brake and go through all the gears and back up in park, check the fluid and fill it but leave it down about 1/2 quart on the stick. take it for a drive and bring it back, park on a level surface and fill it to the full mark on the stick. don,t overfill it because you can blow a seal. Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
Many finer cars have torque converter drain plugs. Your car does not, though. I would go to a GM dealership, and ask if they have a special on trans fluid changes. They will have the EXACT right trans fluid, and filter, and gasket for the job. Don't even think about having this done by a quicky lube. They use generic universal fluid. It has different properties. READ your owner's manual for the right %26quot;fluid specifications.%26quot; Expect to pay around $150 for this service. And, you are right for doing this!!!Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
For your transmission fluid change (by dropping the transmission pan) all you should need is the 6 quarts. The 11 quarts is used when a transmission is replaced and the torque converter was emptied.

When you do a transmission fluid change, you don't actually change all of the fluid (because the torque converter retains 5 quarts)... however, the solution to pollution is dilution. By changing the fluid regularly (every 30,000 miles) then you are able to maintain the proper consistency that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Remember, when you check the fluid level, you need to do it with the engine running and fluid hot.

    I hope this helps.

~JoeWill draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
the contents of the torque converter will remain in that converter. there is a drain plug on some of them if you want to risk creating a leak. if you are only dropping the pan on the thm 440t4, 4t60, or the 4t65e (depending on which generation you are looking at), the pan only holds the 6 qts. that pan gasket is reusable on most of them. start with the 6 qts ans check the level.

How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?

I have a 1999 Hyundai elantra. I want to change the transmission filter and fluid to see if this may clear up a few problems. I don't have the manual, but am assuming that if it easily accessible, then i shouldn't have much problem. How hard will this be?How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?
Instead of creating a $2000 transmission replacement, please take your car in for service, a transmission flush costs less then $150 and is well worth it. As others stated, draining and refilling don't complete the job, so don't waste your time. How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?
This is a messy job. Many factors you'll need to consider. Is the fluid dark and have a sweet odor to it? What kind of problems are you having? Are the %26quot;soft%26quot; parts worn that you have slipping? (engine revs up between shifts) Changing fluid may actually cause transmission to fail sooner if not properly flushed. May have to add an additive such as Sea-Foam Trans tune and drive it for a half hour to dissolve the varnish build up on the inside of the transmission before flushing the transmission. If you just change the fluid the additives that burnt off and deposited on the interior of the transmission will break loose because the detergent additives in the new fluid and plug up the small oil holes or passages inside the transmission and cause it to fail. How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?
It indeed sucks! There is no drain plug so you will inevitably become covered in fluid. You can only get about 50% of the fluid out because alot of it is in the torque converter. I am personally too cheap to pay someone to do anything I can do but this is one job I won't do again. Pay someone to do it or don't bother. How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?

How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01' to go bad without fluid?

Ok, The car insurance is trying to get my mother to pay 50% for a transmission she bought at a dealer ship. Problem is, she just bought it used at 4-5 months ago. They claim it was negligence for not changing the Transmission Fluid. But she did change it at Wal-Mart! Can they still charge her under full warrenty? How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01%26039; to go bad without fluid?
If the car is still under warranty, and it has been properly maintained then they have to fix it. It sounds to me like they are trying to pull one over on your mom claiming that she was negligent, This car is known for problems with the transmission. get a lawyer if need be, and make them pay his fees too!

The car may go a few seconds without tranny fluid, or it could go a long way.How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01%26039; to go bad without fluid?
First you must determine the root cause of the prblem. if the tranny leaks its fluid by itsel, its a waranty problem. if wal-mart put in the wronk fluid, or not enough, then they are liable for full damages, and if this is the case, you need to have it in writing by a certified mechanic, and be adamant with management that it be taken care of. such was the case with my brother in 05'How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01%26039; to go bad without fluid?
So long as she was doing the maintenance on it, and having WalMart change the fluid according to the manufacturers recommendations is sufficient, then she should not have to pay for any repairs.

If the damage was done because she allowed the transmission to run out of fluid, then she is getting out cheap by only having to pay half. Warranty companies do not pay for anything that fails due to normal wear and tear, or anything that fails due to negligence.

If she still has the receipt from WalMart, I would fax that to the warranty company as proof of maintenance.

Prepare to fight a bit for this, the first people you deal with at one of those places, usually work hard to find a reason NOT to pay for damages. How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01%26039; to go bad without fluid?
All she needs is the receipt from Walmart.

You left out a lot of information that would help people answer your question. You never said many miles the car has. How many miles has it been driven since you bought it? Did they say all the maintenance was up to date when you bought it?

You need to know what is the manufacturer recommended interval for changing the transmission fluid?

Go to the dealer and see if they have maintenance records on the car. When was it changed last? It may be possible to go to another dealer and see if it had a extended warranty by the prior owner and see if they can tell you whats been done to the car before you bought it.

Sounds like you need someone who knows cars and is very assertive to go to the dealer with you.

You may have to take them to small claims court. How long does it take a manual transmission on a Corolla 01%26039; to go bad without fluid?

Depending on the Distance of the Drive and weather it was Completely %26quot;Dry%26quot;, 2 to 4 Days to Destroy the Transmission! But During the time it would be Extremely Noisy!

How many quarts for my oil and transmission fluid in my 1987 Suburban?

I've just bought a 1987 Suburban with a 350 TBI engine, it has an automatic 700 transmission, assuming the speedo has only rolled over once, it shows 137,000 miles. What would be the best oil to use, and how many quarts? Also i'd like to change the transmission fluid, best kind and quarts? What brand of spark plugs work good? Thanks ahead of time. How many quarts for my oil and transmission fluid in my 1987 Suburban?
Engine: 5 quarts if you change the oil filter.

Transmission: The 700-R4 transmission holds 6 quarts if is dry but dropping the pan to change the filter will only drain about 5 quarts because the valve body and front pump will retain at least a quart. Add 4 quarts of Dexron III ATF after you have finished changing the filter and then start the engine, check the fluid level with the engine running in PARK, and add accordingly. Total system fill is 11.5 quarts if you decide to completely flush the entire transmission fluid system.

i have an 88 c1500 and i use 5 quarts of kendal oil 10w-30 and i have a aftermarket transmission cooler on my truck, but be for i added the cooler on I would use about 6 or 7 quarts of valvoline max life dext/merc for GM vehicles, but if your looking for the best fluids to put in it both oil and tanny fluid i would go with Royal purple. hope this helps. How many quarts for my oil and transmission fluid in my 1987 Suburban?
It will take 5 quarts if its the standard pan. Some people put on bigger after market pans but the stock engine used 5 quarts. Drop the pan on the trans and change the filter. Usually when people get a transmission service they only exchange the fluid, so you end up with the old filter. It will use about 6 quarts, you only get whats in the pan not the converter. But I still prefer half the fluid and the new filter. Also don't forget the clean the magnet at the bottom of the trans pan. With that many miles save yourself some money and don't throw it away on expensive synthetic oil. Use conventional, I would use 10-40 with that many miles. And before all the driveway hero's (non professional mechanics) start crying because they like to use synthetic oil here's why you don't need to. When you are the original owner and you have always used synthetic it will help and increase the life and cleanliness of the engines internals. But when you get an engine with that many miles and have no idea how often the last owner changed oil you are not going to improve anything by now switching to synthetic.

I am going to change my transmission fluid on my 02 sonata. They did not carry the fluid at autozone. Advanced told me that it took 8 quarts and they had it. I thought 8 qts seemed like a lot. How much and what kind of fluid do I need. What kind of transmission fluid do I use in my 2002 Hyundai sonata?
I had a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and I had to get special transmission fluid from the Hyundai dealership. If you get any other kind it will wreck your transmission, trust me, it happened! I think I ended up using about 8 quarts. I bought a case form the dealership and left the rest in the trunk in case I ever needed them. I believe there were 12 in the case. I can't remember how much I paid but I think it was under $30. Just call the nearest dealership to be sure. What kind of transmission fluid do I use in my 2002 Hyundai sonata?

Check your owners manual ...if you have one. There should be a section for fluids and amounts.

It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?

if so how often? and do you need to change the filter too?It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
Depends on the car you have. Some makes don't require Trans fluid changes. Follow the car's maint. schedule in the manual.

DIY can be challenging if you don't have a mechanical sense.

Dropping a hot pan of oil can be hazardous, even after draining as much as possible. Buying the gasket/filter is the hardest, the Dealer usually charges $$$ for availability. Be sure to get the right fluid for your make. GM has a fluid DexonII, Ford has a separate fluid ATF, Imports have their own.It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
I never do unless there is a problem. It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
YES!!! It is important to change fluids on the schedule determined by the manufacturer.

On my car (an older one) the factory recommends every 40-50 thousand miles. When you replace the fluid, you need to replace the tranny filter as well.

Leaving a car unattended untill somethign goes wrong is a VERY BAD idea. Maintenace will keep a car running for years and years whereas neglect will kill your investment long before it should be scrapped. It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
It is very important to do a transmission filter change about every 12 months. If you get it done every year you will only have to replace the fluid in the pan. If it has been a long time since the last change you might want to have it flushed and completely refilled with fresh fluid. Doing this will extend the life of your transmission, and the money you spend on this simple maintenance will save you many hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in the long run.It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
yes it is very important to change the tranny fluid every 20,000. also a good idea to change the filter, but not critical. although it's not a bad idea, you can probably get someone else to do it for bout 30. good deal.It is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
you should change it at least every 75,000 mi. dosent cost much you can get a filter kit(includes filter and pan gasket). average price $20 and your fluids. easy to do, just a little messy.

    ps

even if your tansmission slips, this can help, before taking it to a garage and them saying you need a trans. always try this first.Ibought car that didnt move at all. changed the filter and had gears. it worksIt is important to change the automatic transmission fluid?
Um...yes... every 12 months or 30000km (filter too), I've known people to get away with it for about 12 months, but the over-drive seal usually goes on them when they put their foot down (abit like doing a clutch in a manual), if you haven't changed it for a while you might wanna change the seals too, if you dont know how long ago it was smell the oil (sounds silly I know) but if it smells foul (even more than usual) its been a while, so change the seals just to be sure, should only cost $200 Aus for the lot, but I'd charged ya $250 ; )

What type of fluid and how often to change it?

The '97 Mercury Tracer I just bought desperately needs the transmission fluid changed. I checked and the fluid is clear, but brown. The car has 35k miles and the trans fluid has never been changed. I looked in the owners manual to see what type of fluid it requires and how often it should be changed. The owner's manual said to check the %26quot;service guide%26quot; that came with the car. I checked the %26quot;service guide%26quot; cover to cover and found absolutely no mention of the transmission! It gives specific info on intervals for maintenance, but no mention of changing transmission fluid! What gives? How often should it be changed and what type of fluid is needed? I've always been told to change transmission fluid every 10k miles. Being that it's never been changed in this car in the first 35k miles of the car's life, it has me very nervous. What type of fluid and how often to change it?
OK, its time..... 10 years is a life time for any trans fluid. You need to change it, it all has to come out. Take it to a dealer ( Ford / Lincoln) or a quick lube place that offer the %26quot;Power Flush%26quot; Trans Service. It removes almost 99% of the fluid, you will also need a filter change to. This will be about $150.00 dollars where ever you take it....BUT TAKE!!!! A new trans will be about $2000.00 for that car, it was made in Brazil. What type of fluid and how often to change it?
I think you should be ok. Most current cars manuals recommend the first atf fluid change at 36k (though it sounds suspect that is has gone 35K in the past 10 years). So you look like you are spot on with timing. Take it to your mechanic, and ask them to change your Auto trans fluid, engine coolant, and engine air filter (if dirty) (you can do this stuff yourself if you have a knowledgeable friend or have a good source from google). Having him inspect the brakes is also a good call... schedule to do this soon.. Good luckWhat type of fluid and how often to change it?
you should be nervous, brown is a bad colour on AFT. go online to factory or dealer for info. as to which fluid. Never buy another car from that person again-they do no maintenance-expect tranny to fail earlier than normal-V. much earlier. when changing fluid, fit a filter in the return line from the radiator, and change it often, you may get more life out of it that way. a rebuild tranny is not cheap. If brown does not return to oil after change, you may have some grace period until it does-pay attention to it.What type of fluid and how often to change it?
If you have a manual transmission, they say to change the oil every 30,000 miles. If it's an automatic, change it every 2 years, or 24,000 miles. Do the filter at the same time.

As to the type of fluid, check with the nearest Ford Mercury dealer. What type of fluid and how often to change it?
    Every 30k miles usually.

Dexron III is supposed to be able to go significantly longer.

You need type F fluid for your Tracer. Just go to the auto parts store, the type F bottle should say %26quot;for Ford vehicles%26quot; right on the front.

Can anyone tell me how i can change my transmission fluid in my cadillac catera please dont tell me the dealer

Have a pan to catch the old fluid as it drains. Start at a corner unscrewing the bolts letting one side drop more so the fluid go to one area and not run out everywhere. IF, remove the pan change your filter while you there, comes with the new pan gasket. Now!!! What I do before replacing the pan. Take a can of Carb Cleaner and clean off old gasket and spray the pan with the Cleaner using paper towels to dry. Then spray around the Gasket surface of Transmission doing same with paper towels. I have found when you clean the Fluid off the Gasket surfaces it will not leak as much. Tighten the bolts snug, then Torque to Specs. IF, you not have a Torque wrench use one hand hold a ratchet close to the Head so you can not get a lot of leverage, tighten about 1/4-1/2 turn. You should notice the Cork Gasket mash some when it tight, if you over-tighten you will see the gasket press out and that too tight. Also, if you over-tighten you can break these bolts, they not have to be torqued with an Air Impact. Parts Store can give you some Information on this too. Good Luck, I hope and feel you can do this. Can anyone tell me how i can change my transmission fluid in my cadillac catera please dont tell me the dealer

Got a few questions. Okay first Its a 3004 Dodge SRT-4 and I'm planning on changing the manual transmission fluid. I looked in the manual and it has a recommendation for the type of fluid however it does not say the quantity? I even called the dealership to ask and they didn't even know. I have no clue how much fluid to buy. Second, why does the manual reccomend automatic transmission fluid for my manual and third this is the first time i've changed trans fluid so if you have any tips or anything please tell me.Changing my manual transmission fluid, help?
get under youre car and on the bottom driver sid there is a plug take it out when done draining put plug back in and up a little hgher there is another plug remove it put fluid in hole put plug back in and youre done ps when its full it will run out of holeChanging my manual transmission fluid, help?
Use the reccomended transmission fluid. And should be a drain plug in the bottom of the housing. The correct amount should be when it starts to drain from the fill plug (located halfway up on the trans housing). You can remove the fill plug prior to draining, and put your pinky into the hole pointing down to check the level, you should be able to touch it unless you had a leak present.

PS. Reason why most new cars use Trans fluid in manual transmissions rather than the old tried and true 90 weight ya find in your old muscle cars is, the trans fluid causes less pressure stress on the trans seals.Changing my manual transmission fluid, help?
well a 2004 car should not need the fluid changed. however if uoy go into an autofactors they can supply the oil you will need. second you just drain it from the lower drain plug then fill in the upper plug on the gear box most of the time if you just fill till oil comes out the hole you have enoughChanging my manual transmission fluid, help?
Transmission fluid is the same for manual and automatic. Remove the drain nut and drain the fluid. There should be a filler nut near the top of the unit. You have to use a hand pump to pump the fluid in. keep checking the level by inserting your finger. When the fluid is near the bottom of the filler nut hole then that should be enough. you have to drop the pan to one side as you take the bolts out and make sure the pan is big enough to catch the fluid and don't remove all the bots at one time and tilt the pan to one side real slowly and you can do this without ever spilling a drop of fluid, and like the above answers said be sur and use nothing but atf-4 back in it, anything else and you,ll have problems from it,its kind of tricky getting the pan to loosen up and get it tilted, but after that its matter of letting it all drain out and re-installing the pan and be sure its dry and the gasket makers makes good seal on it,good luckHow to change the transmission fluid on a 2000 dodge dakota v8 magnum?

About how much would it cost to get my transmission fluid changed and the filters checked/changed?

Its a ninety five mercury mystique with about 100,000 miles. thanksAbout how much would it cost to get my transmission fluid changed and the filters checked/changed?
I would get the transmission fluid DRAINED but would not allow it to get Flushed.

Meaning i would drop the trans pan and unbolt the 2 trans lines to the radiator. then turn over the engine a few turns--but not start it. Whatever flowed out would be it. Then clean the pan,,,,,,change the filter and put everything back together,,,and ( being sure i had the trans fluid type recommended by the auto maker and not a substitute,,,,refill it.

I would never get a transmission flushed--not even for free.

If you can find a place to do it that way then i would say get it done.

Do you have the owners manual??About how much would it cost to get my transmission fluid changed and the filters checked/changed?

ranges from 100 to 200 depending if they change all the fluid out of the converter and adjust the bands as well as install new filter and gasket.

How often should your transmission fluid be changed?

i know that your oil needs to be changed every 4000 miles but is there a magical number about your transmission fluid as well - my car seems to take longer to shift and shifts harder than what i am used to but my mechanic tested it and said there is nothing wrong with the transmission - could it just need a fluid change? How often should your transmission fluid be changed?
i agree with deathdea, i am also a mechanic. the best thing to do is to read your service manual, and never change the fluid without changing the filter also.i you don't have a manual then i would change it every 25k to 30k miles. How often should your transmission fluid be changed?
I change mine every 50K miles and the filter once its over 100K. This depends on your driving habits and conditions of course. How often should your transmission fluid be changed?
OK here is what you do, Inform the mechanic it isn't shifting like it always has. He checked the tranny and said all is well. The problem most likely is your driving habits have changed and you see the tranny shifting differently where the mechanic sees 50 a week and knows when there is and issue internal to the tranny.

Fluid changes should be performed every 20-30K this also depends on the car. Check the manual or ask the mechanic he will know. How often should your transmission fluid be changed?
every cars is different. the obvious thing to do is to check the fluid for discolor. if it is not the same color as the original, replace the fluid. some vehicles such as volkswagen, audi, bmw, or mercedes use special oil that last a lifetime. How often should your transmission fluid be changed?

i bought all the equipment needed to change my transmission fluid. but the guy in autozone told me that i only needed 4quarts of transmission fluid..then i got home and my dad told me that i needed more fluid.so i'm a little confuse. how much fliud do i need. my truck is a 1996 dodge ram 1500 auto transmission. and also it has 107,000 miles and i have never changed the transmission fluid before.Changing transmission fluid?
If you are just doing a pan drop on that to change the fluid and filter, you will need only 4 or 5. Put in 3 quarts and let the truck run to operating temperature. When the fluid is hot, check the dipstick. Don't overfill the fluid, but you have to check it when it is hot because it expands. It should be below the 'add' line with 3 quarts in it. Add another quart, and check it again. At this point it should be on the low side between 'add' and 'full'. You are safe at this point but you can add about a 1/2 quart more if you want to be on the upper end of that safe zone.Changing transmission fluid?
If you only drop the pan and change the tranny filter, 4 should be fine. If you wanted to %26quot;flush%26quot; the whole transmission, then you`d need much more fluid.Changing transmission fluid?
The guy at autozone either knows exactly how much oil you need or he was guessing. Yes, most cars take about 4 quarts. But I would buy 8 just to make sure. Trucks take more oil.

1After changing your filter add the 4 quarts.

2Start your truck and check the fluid. If low add another quart while the engine is running.

3Keep following step 2 until your fluid is up to either the low mark on the dip stick or the full mark.

4 If its at the low mark add half quart at a time until full.

5If it's at the full mark your done.

I say add half quart because Transmission dip sticks are funny. They are sensitive to fluid volume. In an engine one quart takes you from the low mark to the full mark on 99% of engines. Not on Transmissions. Good luck.

    Transmission Fluid Change

I have a 1999 Audi A4 can someone tell me where the trans fluid go and how to put it in.Transmission Fluid Change
the car does not have a trans stick.it is filled by a special machine from underneath the car thru the trans pan.Transmission Fluid Change
should be a a dip stick, one for oil and one for transmission, one is dark that being oil and the other is lighter orange or reddish colorTransmission Fluid Change
the fluid goes in where you check the fluid. pull the stick out, get a large funnel and fill the transmission, but watch you dont overfill it or yu could blow a seal.Transmission Fluid Change
vw is funny with there trans. the plug is meant to break off, so only they get to mess with it. If it needs fluid it probably needs to be serviced all the way.Transmission Fluid Change
I would suggest getting a shop manual for the car (available at most auto parts stores). It will give you the information and will be a valuable tool for future do it yourself maintenance. You want to be sure not to overfill the transmission and to use the right type of fluid. All this information is in a shop manual. Good luck and have fun.Transmission Fluid Change
There is a fill plug in the underside of the transmission pan. There is a special method to filling it.

How do you change the transmission fluid in a 1999 ford contour?

i have a oldsmobile cutlass ciera which you have to take the whole tranny pan out and change the tranny seal so i'm comparing it to that, but unfortunately, ford and gm are never even close to being the same...

so do i have to take the pan out and change the tranny seal or is there possibly an easier way to change the fluid? possibly just a bolt? if so please tell me where it could be under the car so i dont have to spend half the day under this car!!

thanks for the input! How do you change the transmission fluid in a 1999 ford contour?
There's a plug, either 3/8 drive or 1/2 drive ratchet to remove it, though only a quart may come out. Once drained start engine for15 seconds and might have more oil come out. You can only remove a couple of quartsHow do you change the transmission fluid in a 1999 ford contour?
I would recommend you take it to a qualified place to do this. They will hook up a pump that will recycle all your fluid, including what's in the lines and the cooler, a static fluid change will not change all that fluid. They will also be able to dispose of the fluid correctly.

I need to change the transmission fluid on my '89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?

I have been told there may or may not be a plug underneath the transmission that I can simply remove to drain. Does anyone know if this model car has a plug, or if I have to remove the transmission oil pan? If I have to remove the oil pan, how do I recognize it and how is this done? Should the engine be off when I drain the fluid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.I need to change the transmission fluid on my %26039;89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?
Is this an automatic or standard tranny?I need to change the transmission fluid on my %26039;89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?
The engine has to be off and if you decide to change the tranny fluid you should pull the pan anyway and change out the filter as well. The pan is directly under the vehicle close to the oil pan it is not as deep as the oil pan either. Before you start the car back up make sure and put in a few quarts of tranny fluid then start the car in neutral and check the fluid several times to get the level right. After you have done that put the car in gear forward until you feel it engage and then reverse, after doing this check the fluid again and top it off. Drive the car a few miles and check one last time. A few tips are do not over tighten the pan bolts it will cause a leak NEVER run the car without tranny fluid in the tranny. And be sure you don't get any trash inside the tranny one peice of dirt can toast the tranny quick. One more thing if the tranny is working right don't change the fluid leave it alone. On older cars changing the fluid can release some of the debris in the tranny and cause it to go out really fast. It sounds bad but if it ain't broke don't fix it....Good LuckI need to change the transmission fluid on my %26039;89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?
you will have to drop the pan. its better that way because you can change your filter too. the difference is the oil pan is the one closer to the front of the engine and will have a plug. But you can go to the part store and they have a hting with a hose on it you can put in where your dip stick is and drain the fluid out that way. but its best to change the filter too.I need to change the transmission fluid on my %26039;89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?
if its motor oil yes, you need to drop the pan to really clean it. better yet. have it towed to a tranmission shop so they can do a power flush. might cost a little bit but its worth it. i would also recomend changing the trans filter while you are at it. you can get a trans filter and gasket set for roughly 15 to 17 bucks from www.autozone.com good luck.I need to change the transmission fluid on my %26039;89 Pontiac Sunbird SE.?
You have not started it..GOOD. Now drop the pan, change the fluid. DO NOT START IT until you have changed the fluid and filter or you will send the oil into the converter and now, yes, you are talking power flush and not change.

    Good Luck

PS No one is perfect..We all make mistakes,,glad you had the presence of mind not to start it.

since its american is very simple, hidden underneath theres a nut that looks like its holding nothing, if you cant find it may be cause your tranny doesnt have a dip stick, if it doesnt have one you have to take it to your dealer, it uses a machine to inject it thru all lines, e.g. tranny, radiator etc., if you do have a dip stick you just have to look closely under the tranny where the oil pan is at. you are going to find it, just put time into itHow to change the transmission fluid in a 2006 ford focus?
drive the car on some rino ramps.. and under the transmission there is a drain plug drain the fluid in a pail and then put the filler plug back on.. back off the ramps and fill with fluid new... at the store before you do this ask the sales person how many quarts of fluid you need ok.

If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?

It holds 8 quarts total. With my car I can remove the transmission drain plug to drain 3.5 quarts easily. The torque converter holds lots of fluid though. If I change my transmission fluid by replacing 3.5 quarts at a time, how long until all the fluid is new?
Since everything mixes together again, the answer is theoreticlly never. However, allowing a little bit of old fluid, say 1%, then this is the calculation. Let QO(t) be the quarts of old fluid at time t and QN(t) the quarts of new fluid at time t, then QN(t) = 8 - QO(t)

    Q(0) = 8, QN = 0

    Q(1) = 8 - 3.5 =4.5, QN = 3.5

The next draining is not all old fluid and is expected to be made up of the same proportions as the entire supply 4.5:3.5

    Q(2) = 4.5 - 3.5(4.5/8) = 2.53125, QN = 3.5 - 3.5(3.5/8) + 3.5 = 5.46875

Here is an Excel calculation, showing that it takes 12 refills. Of course all of this ignores the new fluid getting dirty!

I need to buy Transmission Fluid and filter before I do that , RIGHT?

THANKSHow to change Transmission Fluid for VOLVO S80 by myself??? thanks?
If I remember correctly. Volvo uses a trans from Aisin-Warner. It requires it's VERY own fluid, from the Volvo dealer. You should call several Volvo dealerships and ask if they are running a trans fluid and filter change service SPECIAL. Many times, they do. THis is the most practical way to be sure that you are doing right for your car. Most European car-makers and Asian car-maker have their very own trans fluid tyoes. E.g., there is Dexron-T, for Toyota; Dexron-H for Honda, etc. Many European cars feature trans fluid that is like synthetic mineral oil instead of petroleum based. READ your manual in the SPECIFICTIONS list for the actual preferred type of fluid!! Many European based cars also have torque converters with drain plugs. This eases the job by making sure ALL the fluid actually is drained before refill!

I have an automatic 1990 Acura Integra. It seems that my gears are shifting late. I guess its the transmission fluid. I want to change my transmission fluid. I've had the car for two years and I don't know if the previous owners ever changed it. Does anyone know how to do this? Also, should I change the transmission filter? How to change transmission fluid?
Check the fluid level according to your owner's manual. You would need Rhino ramps and safety jack stands to do the job and it's VERY messy! At this point I'd recommend you bring it in for a $120 pan service drain as shown below.

  • How to change my transmission fluid?

I recently got some Amsoil transmission fluid. The guy who sold it to me gave me an unorthodox way of changing the fluid that I have yet to see online and wanted to double check before I did it. My Durango holds about 15 quarts of transmission fluid. He said to remove the outlet to the transmission cooler and attach a rubber hose to it, leading to an empty bucket. Then turn the truck on in park, and let the fluid pump into the bucket (straight out of the cooler) until the fluid stops, then immediately turn the truck off. While the truck is off, replace with the same amount of new fluid that came out of the cooler. Then turn the truck back on, and let more fluid pump into the bucket while at the same time replacing with new fluid until I have reached the designated transmission capacity (15 quarts). Then turn the truck off, reattach the outlet cooler line to the cooler, and I'd be good to go. I just wanted to verify if this was safe before I did it. The only moving part in a transmission I am aware of (in park) is the transmission pump. Will doing this method hurt the pump or anything else? Would this method ensure I get mostly Amsoil fluid in the transmission or would it cause a considerable mix of old and new fluid? What would you recommend? How to change my transmission fluid?
As usual the Amzoil dude is missing some valuable steps. Unless the automatic transmission pan is dropped you can't change the tranny filter or clean the inside of the pan. His method will not pick up all the oil in the transmission pan either, by a long shot!

You don't change your motor oil without changing the filter do you? Why is this any less important? How to change my transmission fluid?
Sounds ok to me if you don't want to get messy, but if there is a plug in the pan, just drain it and then fill it and start it and then drain it again and refill. How to change my transmission fluid?
That guy is an idiot. If you wait till the fluid stops coming out you'll be pumping air all through the transmission and causing all kinds of problems.

Put water into the bucket a quart at a time and mark the sides in one quart increments then dump it out. Then you can stop the engine each time you pump a quart of fluid into the bucket and add a quart.

You also need to do a regular service first, and replace the fluid in the pan with fresh, That keeps you from mixing old with new when you start the flush. Just don't run the engine after the service till you have the cooler line going to the bucket.

Do it that way and you'll see the fluid go from dark to clean all of a sudden when you're done. Make sure to buy two more quarts than capacity so you'll get all the old fluid flushed out.

Last thing is if the fluid isn't coming out of the cooler line, try neutral. Some transmissions don't run the pump in park. How to change my transmission fluid?
You are very wise and enlightened for using the Amzoil trans fluid. Make certain it is marked %26quot;for use in Chrysler products.%26quot; I disagree with the procedure, though. You should change the filter inside, it has done it's job by now. Before you spend unnecessary money on extra Amzoil, have your trans pan dropped, install a new filter and pan gasket. While you are there, spray the valve body down as much as possible with CRC CHLORINATED brake clean. This will dislodge any wandering, harmful, clutch pack materials that may reside in these areas. Clean EVERYTHING visible. Clean the trans pan. Clean the attachment bolt holes. Think %26quot;hospital clean%26quot; while you are doing this. Shift solenoids should also be visible. Wash them. too. After you install your new gasket with the pan, top up the trans with a cheaper ATF+4. remember that the torque converter and trans cooler hold some old ATF in them. You can use an air hose before you re-locate your trans pan, if you like to LIGHTLY blow air through the cooler line. Anyways, after you have driven the Durango at least until it's warm, Drop the pan and let it drain. This is like moputhwash, if you like, to rinse anything else bad out of the system. NOW, use the Amzoil. It should last for 100,000 miles. ALTERNATIVE: Just drain the pan, clean the valve body as described, install new gasket and pan. Then go to your dealership or trans shop with your new fluid. They have a machine that will pump things through. This is like insurance. Good luck!!!

Drain fluid and replace filter, filter will pull straight down, and new one will slip right in. Replace gasket and fill fluid(DEXRON 3). Will take 5-6 quarts

Honda civic 2002 LX transmission fluid change and fuel filter?

I'm not a mechanic by any means...I'm good with changing oil, brake pads, spark plugs, some belts and could do an alternator....but I'm not certain if I should try the transmission fluid or take it to a garage???? Also, I looked in my Haynes book and seems like the fuel filter sits on top of the fuel tank and I will have to go back and look but I think I remember reading something about a hatch under the back seat to change the fuel filter so you don't have to drop the tank. Anyone ever try these two things and how difficult would it be??Honda civic 2002 LX transmission fluid change and fuel filter?
    Personally, I don't think a 2002 needs a gas filter change. I wouldn't bother.

As for transmission fluid, I would change it at about the 75,000 mile mark.

First, purchase only fluid made for that vehicle from the dealer - don't buy a generic substitute at the auto store! The Honda's are very fussy about the fluid. I wouldn't take a chance on ruining the trans by buying a cheap replacement fluid.

It is very easy to change it. Just put a catch pan under the trans and remove the plug to drain the fluid. It is true that you will not drain 100% of the fluid this way, but replacing 80% of it gives your trans mostly new fluid in it. This is what I do. The service stations try to sell you a flushing of the system, but it is expensive (they have to pay for the expensive machine).

If you are really concerned about getting all of the old fluid out you can flush it yourself. Here's how: Buy twice the amount of fluid (8 containers instead of 4). Find the trans inlet cooling tube on the bottom of the radiator and crack it open to allow fluid to escape. Start the car and let it idle while filling with new fluid. When you think half of the fluid has been passed through, secure the cooling tube and top off the fluid. It's still a lot cheaper than having a flush done.Honda civic 2002 LX transmission fluid change and fuel filter?

alot of times with a 'drain and fill' method for switching up ur tranny fluid, you will only end up replacing about 50-75% of the fluid, is your trans auto or manual? If it's an auto, I would reccomend just bringing it into a quick lube shop, most of them have t-tec machines that go straight into the dipstick hole, and will replace 100% of the trans fluid. Also, for your fuel filter, I can't remember if the 2002's still have the fuel filter located under the hood by the firewall, if your FF is there, it is an extremely easy job to do, you will just need some open box end wrenches, and vice gripsHonda civic 2002 LX transmission fluid change and fuel filter?
dude dont do it your self, tranny is something you dont wanna mess with, unless you have money for a new one... I think you have to blow and flush all the fluid out b4 you put in the new one, its not like changing motor oil so just take it to the dealer so you have the warranty on it aswell

Do I need a transmission fluid change or valve adjustment?

I drive a 94 Geo Prizm w/ 147,000 miles and to my knowledge, the transmission fluid has not been changed for at least 100,000 miles and probably 10 years. Everything shifts fine, but I am wondering whether or not I should consider changing the fluid out. I hear differeing opinions from anyone I ask.....some say its important to change it every 30k, others say don't touch it.

Also, some people are saying I should get a valve adjustment, which I also hear differing opinions on whether or not its necessary.

How much are each of these services, and how necessary are they? Thanks!Do I need a transmission fluid change or valve adjustment?
its over 100,000 miles and havent been done yet then it should.....a transmission fluid change should be done every 30k or 2 years just to be safe....a trans fluid change is like 50$.....

I have a 2007 Dodge charger 2.7 model with less then 49K. Not to long ago while waiting at a red light the car started to tremble a little bit and my check engine light turned on, I went to get a computer diagnostic from Auto zone and they showed the screen of the COMPUTER they use to do the diagnostic and it said the problem was the transmission fluid. Since then my check engine light has turned off but I would still like to have this problem fixed and I have also not felt the car tremble while waiting at a light. Can some one tell me about how much it would cost to have the transmission fluid change along with a filter if it requires one.

I dont have a problem changing my own Oil but for something like this I figure I would just let the pro檚 handle it.Transmission fluid change cost?
That trembling problem doesn't sound like a transmission issue to me but it's a good idea to have the transmission fluid and filter changed anyway due to the mileage.I would bring it to a transmission shop and have them run a free scan and get them to change the transmission fluid and filter it will cost about 100 bucks to get the fluid changed etc.Just be sure that you have them place the transmission module in the learning mode once the fluid and filter is changed on it and it takes awhile for the transmission to relearn too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way to me it sounds like that vehicle needs a basic tune up it's due for one anyways.Transmission fluid change cost?
I'm going to say about 50-75 bucks. And I agree about not doing it yourself; if you bend the pan it you would have to change it.

I also wouldn't trust Auto Zone that it's the transmission fluid. Bring it to a qualified pro, tell them what they said, and let the pro look at it.

How to change the transmission fluid on a 1991 hona civic dx? help!?

i need to change the transmission fluid on my 1991 honda civic dx hatchback with the 4 speed trans and 1.5l motor. help! How to change the transmission fluid on a 1991 hona civic dx? help!?
Although I haven't personally changed the tranny oil on a 1991 honda civic, I have changed tranny oil on multiple cars. On all of these cars, the one common factor, is that some place or another there's a drain plug and a fill plug. Here's the general process:

    1) Drive car for approx. 15 minutes to get the oil in the tranny warm.

    2) Jack the car up as high as possible that is safe, yet flat.

(be careful, car will be hot)

    3) Find the fill plug and remove.

    4) Find the drain plug, and catch old fluid.

    5) Once fluid is drained, wrap threads with teflon tape and reapply drain plug.

    6) From here, figure out a way to get your new tranny fluid into the fill hole. I usually use a long hose and gravity. Others have used suction guns and what not. Continue to fill the tranny until fluid starts to overflow out of the fill hole.

    7) Wrap fill plug with teflon and reapply (be careful because most transmissions have an aluminum case)

    8) Lower car and test drive, inspect for leaks.

That's basically the gist of it. Good luck. How to change the transmission fluid on a 1991 hona civic dx? help!?

Item 23 is the drain plug which is designed to be removed using a standard 3/8 ratchet wrench.

Item 11 is the dipstick which also serves as the fill hole for new transmission fluid.

    http://www.thehondapartsstore.com/herson

The only 4-speed Honda had available for your car was the automatic. Manual transmissions were 5-speeds. Get the OEM service manual for your car from www.helminc.com and follow the directions within to do your tranmission fluid change properly and to Honda specification. While wrapping the drain plug with teflon tape can't hurt as long as none of the material gets into the transmission, Honda drain plugs have a copper or aluminum crush washer that is designed to seal the plug. You should always replace this seal washer anytime you remove the bolt and follow the manual torque specification.

Unless you are doing this in the freezing cold, there is no particular need to warm the fluid to any major degree.

While a manual transmission is filled until fluid comes out the fill hole THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION! Be sure to fill an automatic until the level reaches the top fill mark on the dipstick with the engine running and the transmission in neutral. You should cycle the transmission through the gear selections to properly distribute the new transmission fluid.

The job is relatively easy. Good luck!
