I have a 1999 Hyundai elantra. I want to change the transmission filter and fluid to see if this may clear up a few problems. Instead of creating a $2000 transmission replacement, please take your car in for service, a transmission flush costs less then $150 and is well worth it. This is a messy job. Many factors you'll need to consider. Is the fluid dark and have a sweet odor to it? What kind of problems are you having? Are the %26quot;soft%26quot; parts worn that you have slipping? (engine revs up between shifts) Changing fluid may actually cause transmission to fail sooner if not properly flushed. May have to add an additive such as Sea-Foam Trans tune and drive it for a half hour to dissolve the varnish build up on the inside of the transmission before flushing the transmission. If you just change the fluid the additives that burnt off and deposited on the interior of the transmission will break loose because the detergent additives in the new fluid and plug up the small oil holes or passages inside the transmission and cause it to fail. It indeed sucks! There is no drain plug so you will inevitably become covered in fluid. You can only get about 50% of the fluid out because alot of it is in the torque converter. I am personally too cheap to pay someone to do anything I can do but this is one job I won't do again. Pay someone to do it or don't bother.How hard is it to change a transmission filter and fluid?
