Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?

I would like to know how often you are suspose to change the transmission fluid, and also are you suspose to change the filter at the time that you change the fluid?Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
A broad answer would be at 30,000 miles. Some higher and some as low as 15,000 miles. Check the maintenance schedule in your owners manual or see a high quality auto repair shop. They can print you a schedule that comes straight from the factory.Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
not knowing the year of your vehicle i can only say that if you change the fluid you should also change the filterTransmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
i change mine about every 10.000miles,and yes you change the filter when you change the fluid,if you are doing a lot of towing service your transmission every 5000 milesTransmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
Replace the fluid every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. The filter can be replaced at 90,000 or 120,000 miles. For replacing the fluid, frequent drain and fills (or pump out and fills) are enough. I don't recommend flushes.

In response to your ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Forget what others said about the year. All (older) 4Runners should have the fluid replaced every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Since your daughter got the car used, have her replace all the fluids and oil if she doesn't know the car's maintenance history. That means the motor oil (and filter), transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid (not as important as the other fluids), and differential gear oil (if it's a 4WD). Also replace the spark plugs (with Denso or NGK brand) and check the air filter.Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
Seriously Buy an american car, they dont usually care if the trasnny fluid is changed, but I do change it, and when it comes out it comes out red like it is supossed to.

All kidding aside, if it is an automatic, try to find instruction if possible about being able to drain the torque convertor, it holds a typical 1.5 gallons, and will make a HUGE difference.

good luck
