im changing the transmission fluid in my explorer and need to know how much transmission fluid i need.How much transmission fluid does a 1997 ford explorer 5.0 awd ned to fill it up?
5 Quarts for a fluid and filter change. As always, capacities are approximate. Final level should be determined by use of the dipstick, following proper procedure.

You can download a PDF copy of your Owner's Manual from Ford here;

Page 186 (page 185 of the PDF) outlines the proper procedure.

I would recommend against starting the engine after adding only a couple quarts. This would be low enough where the fluid pickup could be uncovered, and your transmission would be sucking air. Not good. Fill with engine off until level reaches %26quot;add%26quot; mark. Start engine and shift through gears, and add to the %26quot;add%26quot; mark again. Drive until fluid is at operating temp, and fill to %26quot;full%26quot; mark.

Fluid level will drop when engine is started, and rise as operating temperature is approached.How much transmission fluid does a 1997 ford explorer 5.0 awd ned to fill it up?
1. What I do is pull out the fluid. Measure that amount and re-install the exact amount I took out. Then when you start it up and get it warm, it may have been down before you drained it, then you can top it off.

2. Its very easy to overfill if you read the book and it says to put so much back in. Be very careful of this route, because its easy to overfill and that's not good for your seals.

3. For exact amounts, check with the auto zone, go to the book in the glove box, or find a Haynes manual at the auto zone and look at that. You don't have to buy it just check it out, find out what kind of fluid you need and how much. Again just don't trust the book if your doing the fluid extraction, go back to my 1.How much transmission fluid does a 1997 ford explorer 5.0 awd ned to fill it up?
well first change the filter and pan gasket (removing transmission fluid dipstick first) and then once youve done all the cleaning out and changing parts pour about half the bottle in then start the car up and run it operational temperature bout 10-15 mins, then check dipstick for fluid level...shift gears from reverse to 3 and 4 several times then check levels again and top up to just below max mark as the fluid will expand when engine is hot. You will probably need the whole bottle normally 0,5L and maybe even more if needs be.How much transmission fluid does a 1997 ford explorer 5.0 awd ned to fill it up?
i would say at least 6 or 7 quarts.the torque converter will hold the most.How much transmission fluid does a 1997 ford explorer 5.0 awd ned to fill it up?
well if you are just changing the fluid and filter I think it takes 5 qt's, I always pour 2 qt's and start up motor allow to warm up and check the fluid and go from there.
