i need to change the fluid, however there is no conventional dipstick like on most cars. Does anybody have an idea as to where it is?How do i put transmission fluid in a 2002 BMW 745i?
From underneath. There's a fill plug and a drain plug located on the transmission pan. It looks counter-intuitive because the fill plug is actually on the bottom of the transmission, albeit inside a deep recess.
Although the transmission is a different model between the E38 and E65 7-series, the servicing procedure is basically the same. Take a look at the link I've posted below, as well as several others on the E38.org page.
Be sure to use the proper fluid (available from your dealer, or some dealer alternatives, such as bavauto.com. It's expensive, but necessary! And use a high-quality filter and gasket for the pan. Remember when working inside an automatic transmission that it's important to keep everything very clean.
