Transmission Fluid in Pontiac Vibe continually dirty?

I just bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe with under 60, 000 miles on it. The person that I bought the car from showed me documentation that the oil, air filter and transmission fluid had all been changed in August. I just took the car in to get another oil change and they said my transmission fluid was dirty. They even showed me it as it was being pumped out and comparatively it looked pretty dirty next to what was being pumped in. How can the transmission fluid get dirty in less than 3 months and very little mileage put on in that interval? Did the first guy not do his job? The air filter apparently also needs to be changed again. What could explain this?Transmission Fluid in Pontiac Vibe continually dirty?
Either the guy didn't do the job, got conned himself, or just had the fluid drained and not a full fluid exchange like you got. A fuild drain only replaces about 10% of the AT fluid. The mechanic drains the transmission pan and replaces/cleans the filter. There's still a lot of fluid in the transmission inner workings and even more in the torque convertor. SO, if you mix 10% clean fluid with 90% dirty fluid you would just end up with slightly cleaner ATF. It's always best to have a full ATF exchange. The price generally runs in the low 100s.Transmission Fluid in Pontiac Vibe continually dirty?
Because the owner didn't change it at 30,000 miles like the GM maintenance schedule told him (her) to.Transmission Fluid in Pontiac Vibe continually dirty?
a bad transmission fluid filter. tranny fluid filters are very small and can go out quite easily. buy one from advanced auto parts cheap and not so hard to replace probably not so hard on a vibe

  • How many quarts of transmission fluid for a 98 eclipse?

i want to change the tranny fluid in my 98 eclipse, i understand the bell housing holds fluid i cannot get, but how many quarts should i need thxHow many quarts of transmission fluid for a 98 eclipse?
the bell housing don,t hold nothing. it,s the torque converter is what holds the most. i would say if your going to drain most of the fluid out of the converter then pick up about 7 or 8 quarts. if you put your car on ramps then some of the fluid will drain out of the torque converter. How many quarts of transmission fluid for a 98 eclipse?
    its in the manuel

Aside from fluid changes or flushes, are there other ways to tune up an automatic transmission?

I hate the feeling of how laggy the automatic tranny feels when driving my 99 Civic, especially when after slowing down to turn corners or the delayed feeling when reaccelerating after slowing down from a faster speed. Are there any ways to %26quot;tune up%26quot; the transmisson on my model car? Or does it feel laggy just because its was built a slow car? Like will i just have to deal with it?Aside from fluid changes or flushes, are there other ways to tune up an automatic transmission?
There are lots more than a flush or fluid change that can be done to a transmission, but before doing anything see if you can drive another civic much the same as yours with a similar mileage and see if that drives any different to yours.

You can have the bands adjusted on your transmission or have it fully rebuilt with new clutches and bands. Be wary of the costs involved as it might not make a huge deal of difference, it would probably be cheaper to get a change over one fitted if you feel its needed.

Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?

Basically, after taking my car for service I realized the transmission fluid in my car is black and burnt -- something that obviously isn't good. I'm going to get it changed, but I'm tight on both time and money for the next week. Questions:

    1) How long/how many miles can I really wait until I change it, without doing any (minimal) damage?

    2) Is it likely that it's all ready done permanent damage? Like if I were to have it changed right now, would the transmission %26quot;recover,%26quot; so to say, and be fine? Or is there permanent damage, now that the fluid was left in this state for... months? A year or more? The transmission does slip, and there is a %26quot;high pitched whistling noise%26quot; that the car makes -- probably from the transmission.

    3) How much should it cost to change the transmission transmission fluid? I was told it would be $139.99 at a Valvoline.

Also, if it matters, that car's a 1998 Ford Escort SE Wagon. 2.0 liter engine 4 cylinder. It has 123,000 miles on it.Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
    In all honesty, I only read your question up until you wrote, %26quot;The transmission does slip...%26quot;

Don't waste your money on a fluid change - it's too late.Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
LeAnne is most likely correct; that transmission is probably history. Black, overheated fluid like you have is a result of burned, overheated clutch disks that are likely too damaged to be much good any more. Quick check -- drop the pan. I'm willing to bet it and the filter will be full of clutch material. Time for a rebuild or a new tranny. :(Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
Slippage and the black fluid are related. The blackness is the material bonded on the %26quot;Bands%26quot;.Somewhat like a clutch material,it is bonded on the inside of the band and when the band is tightened against the ring gear the power gets transferred through the sun and planet gears. This basic design and principle dates back as far as1200C.E.If the band material is worn or glazed the transmission will slip.It also most likely has plugged the internal filter. In some cases the Band can be adjusted.Short of a total rebuild.Bendix makes a replacement band that can be installed without removal of the transmission.I would start with a fluid and filter change.Try to have the bands adjusted if the slippage gets to be too much then the fact that it is an Escort will come into play. What is the car worth to you?You may be able to coax it for awhile. The damage has been done to a commonly replaced part.Whistling noise could also be a source of slippage.Check the vacuum line(s) to the transmission regulator.Generally on the passenger side.Black transmission fluid? Your transmission is ruined. Would have never happened if you had changed the fluid per the schedule. Sorry. Black transmission oil is death. It should be light pink in color.

Do NOT change your tranny fluid! Your trans is already FUBAR. You will need to have it rebuilt or replaced. If its low on fluid add some to get it to the right level but DO NOT change or flush it if its black and burnt. It sounds like you have burnt up the friction material in your trans- the stuff that makes it go. Your nasty black tranny fluid is the only thing keeping your car going forwards. You probably dont have much time left on the trans. Accelerate slowly and drive like grandma. And be ready to have it towed soon.Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
If it works fine, add fluid ONLY.

    DON'T Change it!!!!!!!!

All I know is that black transmission oil is bad. What I do want to tell you is check with Ford shops on how much it is to change out the transmission fluid. Where I live, Firestone wants about $180.00 to do a transmission flush for our small SUV and Ford can do the same for $119.00. Shop around and also ask if they recommend a transmission flush, I'm thinking that most shops will recommend it and some people here on Yahoo! Answers don't recommend it.Black transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
once your tranny fluid is black the damage is already doneBlack transmission fluid? Problem? [ten points best answer]?
the transmission have these things called clutch packs it and they are coated it a special material. if that coating wears off, it changes the color of the fluid to black or dark brown.basically the transmission is worn out and will need to be replaced soon.flushing it only makes it worse. if the trans is slipping and you have it flushed, odds are it wont go fifty miles before it completely gives out. the best thing you can do is just leave it the way it is and baby it, start saving up money for a new trans or a new car too.it may last a week or a year you really dont know.ford did have alot of trans problems and that one is about done, which is normal with the mileage.if you want to, lucas oil makes a trans stop slip and it works pretty good. you can find it at an autoparts store.just add it in there with the old fluid and that may help with the slipping thing. hope this helps you, sorry probably not the answer you were looking for but it is what it is.

    Checking my Transmission fluid?

I just changed my transmission filter and fluid (whole deal) and in my book it said when done to add 4 quarts of fuild. So i did that and when the car is not running and the engine is warm the lid level is in the Hot range so it seems as if there is enough fluid. But when I do it with the engine running (How I thought your supposed to do it) it is barely at the bottom end of the COLD region of the dip stick. Do I need to add more fluid so when the tranny is hot and the engine is running the fluid level is in the HOT region?

If it makes any difference I drive a 1998 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6Checking my Transmission fluid?
No, you got it right. But if your transmission slips go ahead and add a littli more, that should do it.Checking my Transmission fluid?
I think so, but check with Auto Zone.Checking my Transmission fluid?
check yer owners manual for checking oil ...some newer cars are to be checked coldChecking my Transmission fluid?
you check the transmission fluid with the car running. If it says it's low, add another quart, but add a little at a time. you don't want to put too much in.Checking my Transmission fluid?
Look in the owner's manual for the proper way to check the transmission fluid. That's the way we used to check it, but times may have changed. good luckChecking my Transmission fluid?
You need to have the car running in park, warmed up..... then check the fluid, it should be in the safe or full region, whatever your stick says. Always check transmission fluid with the car running warmed up. Add fluid if it is low, 4 quarts is not enough to fill a transmission.Checking my Transmission fluid?
The proper way to check the fluid is with the engine idling in park...if it is reading lower, just add a little at a time until it comes up to where it is supposed to be...

I always check mine with the engine cold, you can't over fill that way...and you can't be too low either, most important...Checking my Transmission fluid?
the motor has to be running, so if it measures low while running add more fluid, also hold the brake and change gears to help the fluid move to where it needs to be, but only add a quart at a time!Checking my Transmission fluid?
what you need to do is warm up the car and park on a level surface and check the oil, while the engine is still running.if its low, fill it up to the full mark.probably what happened,is you drained part of the converter, which holds the most fluid, and if you did, then it will read low, until you finish filling it.i have the same trouble with my olds.,and its got a 3.8 in it.i thought i would never get it full.Checking my Transmission fluid?
add more fliud bc the fliud you put in when it wasent running was just the holding tank but after you turn on the car it runs the fluid through the transmission and lowers the amount in your car so i say turn it on for about a min or so and then check it if its still low add more and when its at the %26quot;line%26quot; where theres enough then your ok but do this process over and over till your reach that %26quot;line%26quot; on the stick that says its full hope that helpsChecking my Transmission fluid?
You should always check your transmission fluid with it warmed up.

The car doesn't need to actually be running (and probably shouldn't be).Checking my Transmission fluid?
Anyone who told you your engine should NOT be running is WRONG.......Some have said to check it with engine running and hot and on a level surface. They are RIGHT........

Check your dipstick, it will probably tell you how to check the fluid as well.. It should be, hot, engine running in parkChecking my Transmission fluid?
unless someone changed sticks on you ,, the dipstick on a ford car will tell you %26quot; check with eng. running in park %26quot; also if the trany is not at normal opperating temp the fluid will expand some ,,, usually there are a set of hash marks or xxxes on the stick with the word FULL at the upper end ,,, also it will say not to over fill ,,,,, the others stating extra loss of fluid from converter is true ,,,,, add till you come between the top and bottom of the xxxes on your stick and you should be good to go ! ! !

  • Im looking @ buying this used 98 Acura CL but it needs the solenoids on the transmission to be replaced?

How much is this gonna cost? I dont want to have to replace the entire transmission. Kelly Blue Book is $3295 and the guy's willing to take $2200...Is it worth it? (Also needs: Transmission flush, fluid change and cleaning of filter)Im looking @ buying this used 98 Acura CL but it needs the solenoids on the transmission to be replaced?
it most likely needs a transmission. these are notorious for complete failures. i've had plenty with new solenoids and pcms from transmission shops that i've put new transmissions in. solenoids alone are $500+. Flushing a honda AT won't fix anything. and there is no filter to change. Plan on $2500-3000 for a good reman trans, installed.

Fluid change in my ford c6 tran?

I need step by step procedure on how to change the fluid in the c6 transmission in my 1974 f100 with a 460 big block. please be detailed as much as possible, this is my first rodeo with this sort of thing.Fluid change in my ford c6 tran?
Jack the truck up and place it on stands. Put a drain pan under the transmission and slowly loosen the bolts until fluid starts coming out. You can remove some of the bolts while it is draining but leave a couple in it until most of the fluid is out. when the fluid is out drop the pan the rest of the way. If you are changing the filter look closely at the old one and you will see the bolts holding it on. Take them out and watch out for a little more fluid to come out. Replace the new filter just like the old one came out. Put the new gasket on the pan and install the bolts. If you want to drain the torque converter there should be a plug on the front of the converter. You have to remove the front cover at the tranmission and motor to get to it. Once again place the pan under it and loosen the plug to drain it. You may have to turn the motor over by hand to find the plug but there should be one on that model. When you go to refill it the transmission will hold 10-12 quarts of fluid. This is a little long but I think you can get the job done . Good luck

07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?

I find it crazy that cars no longer have a dip-stick. My lil sister hit a curb and I had to change her transmission pan. Does anyone know how many quarts of Dex IV to use? Iv read other post and it says to fill until the drain plug over flows. There is nothing in the owners manual. Thanks07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?
Go to http://www.gtasynthetics.com and go to the menu on the left where it says Product Lookup.

Click there and put in your car. It will tell you how much fluid you need and what type, along with other fluids as well.07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?
You are right this is much harder than it needs to be. The correct procedure is remove the plug it is located near where the right axle leaves the transaxle. It is just a little plug kinda hard to find. Then with engine running add fluid till it starts to come out of hole.07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?
In the specs of the fluids in the back of the owner manual there is no information as to how many quarts to put in? Wow new cars are really getting crazy. If it is that new, it is prob DEX 6 VI, also depends on automatic or manual. If it is manual then you need manual trans fluid from GM or similar. I would quote a quantity but it would be best to call the dealer and ask for service, they will be able to tell you the amount, best luck07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?
Many of the GM engines had %26quot;permanent - lifetime%26quot; fluids installed in them. When there is nothing in the Owner's Manual about these lubricants, it is usually a Dealer assignment (Inspection) at 100,000 mile intervals, or every 10 years, which ever comes first.07 chevy cobalt how many quarts of transmission fluid?
Sorry, but I don't know what to say other then agree with you that no dipstick is a real flaw.

I have seen it on a Japanese car, and I almost did not beleive it.

Since you have to fill the torque converter, you need to check while engine is running.

And with no dipstick, that is positively dangerous.

In fact, if the engine were to stop by itself, you could get burned by the hot ATF overflow.

But here is the tech release:

My automatic transmission does not kick into gear sometimes, why is that?

I have a Grand Prix where the transmission doesn't engage when I start the car up for the first time. I have to put it in gear and then rev the engine up real high and then suddenly click! the car slips into gear and everything is fine until the next day after the car has been sitting for a while.

So is this just gunk clogging the mechanism or am I experiencing some permanent damage, or the start of permanent damage? After it starts working then it works great no matter how long I drive it until I park it for a few hours that is...

Would it help to change my automatic transmission fluid with a siphon pump, or will it leave too much gunk in the pan even if I do that? I was thinking of taking it to the service station for a tranmission fluid change but it is rather costly compared to an oil change. But before I do that could it help if I siphone changed the transmission fluid? How much cleaner would things get?My automatic transmission does not kick into gear sometimes, why is that?
Your first concern is fluid level, and condition.

If the level is OK, check the fluid closely for its appearance and smell. Normal fluid will be red in color and have a clean petroleum sort of smell. If it has a lot of shavings in it and smells burned, it is too late for an oil change as the damage is already done. If this is the case, just plan on getting another transmission in the near future, watch the oil level, and drive her 'til she blows.

To change the transmission oil without dropping the pan is a waste of time, as there is a filter in the trany which can only be replaced by dropping the pan. If that filter plugs up, it can cause the problem of a delayed shift like you described. If you drop the pan, and there's big piles of shavings on the magnet (little bit is normal), that trany is getting worn out.My automatic transmission does not kick into gear sometimes, why is that?
I assume you have already checked that the fluid is filled to the correct level. I also assume that you have over 60,000 miles on this car.

The transmission fluid filter is getting clogged. Drain the transmission fluid. Remove the pan on the bottom of the transmission. Clean the pan. Replace the filter. Fill transmission fluid to the corrrect level.

When you clean the transmission fluid pan it is not unusual to find a lot of gunk ans even some metal shavings in the pan and the filter. My automatic transmission does not kick into gear sometimes, why is that?
The problem you described is caused by low fuild level.

If you do decide to change the fluid, do it the right way and take the pan off. There is a small filter inside that you need to change.

How often do i do Car Maintance?

I want to keep my car up in maintance but how often do i get an:

    Oil change

    tire rotated

    new brakes

    fluids changed

    Transmission check or drained

    Ect.

you kinda get the point can you help me please. How often do i do Car Maintance?
When to change oil? You can not look at oil and determine either condition unless there is particulate matter or sludge present. And unless oil is subjected to extremely high temps and breaks down, the oil itself doesn’t really “go bad”. But the additive package does “go away” over time. So the correct interval is a guess. A rule of thumb is the greater percentage of “severe” conditions, the shorter the interval between changes. What’s severe? Heat of summer, very cold temps, stop/go driving, high engine loads; which is about everyone. What’s not severe? A vehicle that runs at near constant load for extended periods of time without stopping and starting. So you’ve got to decide.

My advice? Change oil and filter between 3,000 and 5,000 miles under really severe conditions and 5 – 7,500 if the engine’s being babied.

Tiore rotation: Every 10-15,000 miles or sooner if all tires are NOT wearing the same.

Brake service: As required. Often depends on how you drive.

Fluids: I'm not a big fan of changing fluids. Often more harm is done than good. Keep them all at the level specified and you should be OK. Engine coolant is the excpetion where 24 months is generally appropriate.

Transmission: Check the level evey month or two, but I wouldn't change it as often as some OEMs recommend for the reason cited above. A good automatic transmisson should not require the fluid to be changed more often than 100,000 miles unless there's indications of a problem with the fluid.. But like I say, that's my personnel opinion. How often do i do Car Maintance?
wel oil change is every 3000 to 4000 miles tires rotated every 20000 miles brakes 40k to 50k coolant flushed every 30k and trans fluid check every 1000 miles changed at 50kHow often do i do Car Maintance?
It depends on the type of car you have and the year. For example, some of new cars say oil changed only every 3500-3750 miles. I would suggest looking in your owner's manual-it gives a schedule for all the stuff.

If you don't have one, go to the website of your car and it should offer maintenance tips for year and type of car.How often do i do Car Maintance?
The Oil change can be done every 6,000 to 9,000 miles depend on the size of the car and the type of car and how often you use the car. you can check the from your local Tyre shop they should advice and it's normally a free services. New brakes can go up 10,000 miles depending if the car is auto or manual. the rest could go up to three or more years depending on usageHow often do i do Car Maintance?
No Problem, Just do as the owners manual says,Brakes should last 40 to50 thousand miles if you don't ride them, Check transmission every other oil change, Rotate tires ever other oil change and you be OKHow often do i do Car Maintance?
    Ok, as I learned it it's :

Oil change every 3 months or 3,000 miles.

Tires rotated every other oil change.

Brakes checked each time you rotate tires because different people and different vehicles wear out brakes at different times. (many shops will check this for free by the way)

Transmissions should be flushed every 30,000 miles.

Brake fluid changed every 12,000 miles or at least once a year.

Coolant depends on what kind you have. If you have the old fashioned green stuff you need to flush it every 30,000 miles refilling it with a 50/50 mix of coolant and purified water. If you have the new Dexcool (orange) stuff you should flush it every 70,000 miles with a 50/50 mix of coolant and purified water. How often do i do Car Maintance?
oil change/tire rotation same time do it every 7500 miles all multipurpose oils are good for 7500 miles,do your brakes every 2 years brakes get very hot so they can only with stand the heat for so long then theyll go bad, transmission, power steering fluid same type do every 30,000 miles.coolant flush once a year.put fuel cleaner in your tank every 6 mnonthHow often do i do Car Maintance?
Well oil changes should be done at about every 3 months or 3000 miles. This is a basic rule of thumb as some oils are still affective up to 5000 miles or in a very few instances, 7500 miles. Tires, I think I would go every other oil change at 6000 miles. Brakes, I usually change them as soon as I start hearing the front brakes make noise and check the rear at the same time. Transmission can be checked at every oil change and changed every year. This is a very basic and general information. It would be best advised to talk with a trusted mechanic or dealer service writer. How often do i do Car Maintance?

Can someone explain to me how to "flush" the transmission fluid on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?

I'm trying to %26quot;flush%26quot; the transmission fluid on my 01 Ford Sport Trac. I think I know the way how but I would really like a second opinion or someone to say i'm right. From what I have been told, you disconnect the line that runs from the transmission to the transmission cooler and place it in a measured (quarts) bucket. You start the truck and let the transmission pump the old fluid out and you just add a quart for every quart that is pumped out. You should be able to pump out about 16-19 quarts before you start seeing new fluid? Does this way really work? Is there another way to do this? Does anyone have pictures of the lines that I should disconnect? I am pretty good with tools and do all my own work on my truck like fluid changes and such but a transmission flush is new to me and I won't pay some goofball 120 bucks to do it. I really want to do this myself. If someone could explian it to me or link a write-up I would greately appreciate it.Can someone explain to me how to %26quot;flush%26quot; the transmission fluid on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
Well, the %26quot;goofball%26quot; is going to be using a machine. That costs money.

If you want to do it the backyard way, it's pretty much like you describe, with one big difference:

Have the suction line (the other one that's not shooting fluid out) extended into another CLEAN bucket of new fluid.

Start it and let it run. It'll suck the new fluid up and fill the other bucket with the old fluid. When it runs clean, you're done.

Also, get a can of tranmission cleaner like a shop would use. Lots of shops use BG products, and their cleaners are excellent.

That is basically what the machine does. You put the cleaner in the trans first, and let it run/circulate for awhile...then do the fluid exchange. Can someone explain to me how to %26quot;flush%26quot; the transmission fluid on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
You need to pick the line that is coming BACK from the cooler in to your transmission. Other than that, you've got it right.

I just had my '05 Taurus transmission flushed. $259! Yea, it ain't cheap! All he does it hook up a machine and let it do the work. Can someone explain to me how to %26quot;flush%26quot; the transmission fluid on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?

But anyhow you can do it at the house but requires replacing the fluid at the same time you are removing the old fluid and usually the flow is good enough to pump more out than can go back in at the same time and can cause damage to the transmission. best to use a machine that uses constant pressure and flow on it as these are some of the problem childs when it comes to flushing.

Not sure on yours, but some rear wheel drives from that time frame, you can drain the convertor as well as the pan and have at most 1 quart of old oil left and most can do it themselves.. the convertor has a plug on it to drain the fluid...

If not best to leave it to a pro shop

How to check transmission fluid on Mercedes C320 2002?

I just had some work done on my 2002 Mercedes C320 and provided the mechanic with 8quarts of Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF. I'm trying to figure out how I can check to see if he actually changed the transmission fluid. I tried using a wire coat hanger, and also my friends' Xterra transmission dip stick and both provided a most blackish/brown/yellow-green fluid...I don't know if this is grundge from acquired on the way down, or if I am actually hitting the reservoir. Any ideas on how I can verify if it has been changed out or not? There is not a Mercedes dealer in my city, and Jiffy Lube doesn't have a dip-stick either...Thanks for the help! How to check transmission fluid on Mercedes C320 2002?
It seems like you are not checking the right thing. Are you checking the transmission or the engine oil? Neither of them have dipsticks on these cars. (idiotic)

How to drain and change the fluid of MANUAL TRANSMISSION in 1996 Honda CIVIC VTI SOCH Engine?

And what type of viscosity should i use? some says i can use motor oil 10w30 of viscosity temporarily. How to drain and change the fluid of MANUAL TRANSMISSION in 1996 Honda CIVIC VTI SOCH Engine?
Honda recommends that you change your manual transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. So if it has been awhile you may want to consider changing the fluid. If you just bought the car, it might be a good idea to change the fluid as well. Every time you grind a gear, small metal shavings fall into the transmission fluid and will cause premature wear on the transmission components.

    What fluid should I use?

If you have any doubts, go with genuine Honda MTL. Some older integra manuals recommend the use of 10w30 motor oil. These manuals were written before honda developed there own MTL, and have since been updated to say %26quot;the use of 10w30 should only be used as a temporary solution.%26quot; If you are willing to drain and fill the oil again if something goes wrong, you should look into the use of high quality synthetic transmission oils.

    Redline MTL

This is what I used in this project. Redline makes excellent oil and motor products, and I have heard many good things about switching to redline. It is synthetic oil, so it will provide less drag on the transmission, and will resist breakdown longer. According to redline, its viscosity is equal to 5w30/10w30 motor oil.

Here are the benefits listed on Redlines site

    Eliminates notchy shifting

Designed for manual transmissions and transaxles

    Perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction

    Enables high-speed downshifting

    Excellent shifting even when cold

Eliminates gear whine and rattle at high temperatures

    High-performance gear protection

    Non-corrosive toward synchronizers

Satisfies manual transmissions and transaxles requiring motor oils or GL-1, GL-3, or GL-4 gear oils.

    Mobil One MTF

Mobil One is another synthetic MTL. Mobil One is much easier to find locally then Redline, and it is slightly cheaper. Mobil One lists the following benefits.

Minimizes wear to prolong gear life.

Offers the highest resistance to breakdown from heat and high-speed operation.

Makes manual gearshifts easier and faster to operate.

    Improves fuel economy.

    BG Syncroshift II

This MTL has been a cult replacement fluid in the car enthusiast world for some time. It is often compared to Redline in terms of quality, yet it is almost unheard by most people. It is also repackaged by GM and called %26quot;Syncromesh%26quot;. Originally it was a dino oil (BG Syncroshift), but they recently came out with a new synthetic formula dubbed %26quot;Syncroshift II%26quot;. I have read about all sorts of transmission problems that were cured by BG Syncroshift, the downside is I had a hard time finding any real information about the product itself, BG's website doesn't even mention it. It's a very mysterious transmission oil.

First thing to do is get your floor jack out, and remove your front passenger side wheel. This will leave you with full access to the drain and filler plug. After you have removed the wheel, take a look and locate both plugs. The filler plug is a 17mm bolt on the left side of the transmission housing. The drain plug is slightly lower, and to the right of the filler plug. The drain plug is removed by a 1/4%26quot; wrench, in this situation we will use one of the extensions.

Space is the hardest part to changing the transmission oil. That is why it is important to have several different length extensions for your wrench and breaker-bar. You may want to spray both bolts down with penetrating oil, as they are likely to be on very tight. Remove the filler plug first. This way if for some reason you can't remove one of the plugs, you are not stuck with a transmission that has no oil. You will need to use the breaker bar, and remember that counterclockwise is to remove the nut, clockwise is to tighten it. Both of the nuts are extremely tight, so you may have to work at them a bit. They will come off, you use have to put some muscle into it. Once you break the nut free, you can switch to the socket wrench and remove the filler nut. Clean off the nut and replace the crushed washer. Make sure that your oil funnel and hose are long enough to reach the filler hole.

    Draining the fluid

Adjust the floor jack so that the car is level. This can be hard to judge from up close, so you may need a friend to help you out. Another alternative is to take a few steps back and look.

Once the car is level, move the drain pan under the drain nut. Using the breaker bar and just a 3/8%26quot; extension, break the nut free. Again switch over to the socket wrench to back the nut out the rest of the way. Careful not to drop it into the oil pan. Again clean the nut off, and replace the crushed washer. Integra transmissions hold 2.3quarts of oil, so it won't take long to drain. Once it is done draining, replace the drain nut and tighten it to 29lbs/ft.

Suggestion by Night_Lightning: Replacing your drain nut with a magnetic counterpart will help collect metal shavings and prevent wear to your transmission. You can further remove those shavings by using a telescope magnet in the drain and filler holes to collect loose shavings.

Place the funnel and hose into the filler hole, and slowly poor transmission fluid into the transmission. Once the transmission is full, oil will slowly drip out of the filler hole. To be sure it's completely full, put your finger inside the filler hole and make sure the oil is at least to the bottom edge of the hole. Replace the filler nut, and tighten it to 33lbs/ft.

If any oil dripped during the fill, make sure to clean it off. The oil will slowly eat away at the CV boots, and those can be very costly to repair. Using a Ph balanced cleaner will remove the oil and be gentle on the rubber boots. If you want further protection, use a high quality rubber dressing like Lexol or Aerospace 303.

Replace your wheel, and you are good to go!How to drain and change the fluid of MANUAL TRANSMISSION in 1996 Honda CIVIC VTI SOCH Engine?
ONLY USE THE RECOMENDED FLUID FOR YOUR TRANSMISSION, NEVER USE ANYTHING TO SUBSITUE EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME!!!!!!

Ok with that said, go to your local auto parts store and talk to the guys at the parts counter. They can look up the correct fluid for that car. Next, there are 2 plugs located on the transmission, if I remember right one is on the very bottom of the transmission and the other is located just about the middle of the transmission. Pull the one on the very bottom, make sure you remove the plug slowly as to avoid spillage. once all the fluid is drained out replace the plug and tighten it down, (no to tight or you'll strip out the plug. Then you have huge problems) Next remove the plug on the side of the transmission. this is where you will fill the transmission back up. Continue to fill it until you see fluid coming out of the hold. Cap the hole and your done. How to drain and change the fluid of MANUAL TRANSMISSION in 1996 Honda CIVIC VTI SOCH Engine?
the drain plug is located on the bottom of the transmission below the passenger side axle. the fill plug is on the same side just above the same axle. the only fluid you should use is honda specific manual transmission fluid, it will provide the best shift quality and greatly extend the life of the transmission, trust me on this one!

  • How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?

i have a 2004 chevy silverado with a V8 6.6L turbocharged duramax diesel, it has an N74 allsion transmission. i have heard of some people disconnecting the line to the transmission cooler and letting their truck idle but it dosent sound safe. is there any other ways to get all of the old fluid out when changing it?

ThanksHow do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
Take your truck to a transmission shop and have them do a 100% exchange flush. 150-175$. That is the only way to do a 100% change from old to new. You can by the equipment and do it yourself but that isn't very cost effective.

PS- a 2004 doesn't need a full exchange or flush, just a regular change by dropping the pan replacing the filter and removing any metal flakes on the magnet. How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
The transmission cooling line is how you do it. The pros have an expensive machine to circulate it, but you can do it yourself with a 5 gallon plastic bucket. You just disconnect the return side cooler line from the radiator and hook the radiator port that the fluid comes out of to some tubing going to the bucket. Remembering to plug the line going back to the tranny.

Mark the side of the bucket in 1 quart intervals. Then you just run the engine long enough to pump one quart of fluid into the bucket, turn it off and add a quart of new fluid to the tranny. Keep doing that till you've used up as much fluid as your transmission holds.

You'll need to drop the pan and do a regular service before you flush, filling the pan back up with clean fluid. That keeps you from mixing old and new fluid when you start the flush. How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
Could take to a shop or lube place where they have the equipment to pump it all out, including that from the torque converter. How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
    on the manual it lists removing the plug to drain, refill with new oil, run car, drain and refill again, run again and drain and refill, check oil until you see the oil %26quot;clean%26quot;

Sucks Ha!!How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
take and have the tranny flushed is the only way other than pulling the tranny and taking the torque converter out and dumping it, if you want it all out the flush is what I would recommend plus tell them you want the filter changed too as they won't do that with a flush unless you tell them to.How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
letting the pump work the fluid out is a BAD idea, as the fluid enters the pump, it gets cycled through the transmission pressure circuits, and into the torque converter, from the converter it goes to the cooler, then it goes back to the transmission to lubricate the moving parts - so as you can imagine, unhooking a cooler line will cause the transmissions moving parts to not be lubricated.

The only way you can really be assured that you have cycled all the fluid out of the transmission is to have a shop flush the transmission using a special device built just for this purpose. How do i change all of the fluid in my automatic transmission, not just the fluid in the pan?
Take it to a tranny shop and they have a flush machine that will do the job, but most experienced tranny mechanics don't recommend this procedure on a good working tranny. Check it out first by calling a few.

Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?

$230! Granted, this was for a synthetic oil change. However, the oil change place hit me (again) with auto transmission fluid and power steering fluid change rec. So, I went for it. This is for a 2005 Chrysler T%26amp;C (caravan). I have about 77,000 miles and haven't done these changes since I bought it new in '05.

In general, is this kind of stuff necessary on this kind of vehicle? Also, how hard would it be to do it myself? They said they had some sort of pump for the power steering, etc. I don't have that, but I do have a pretty good toolset, jack, etc. I've got another car (2000 SAAB 9-3) that has about 60,000 on it. So, I also want to know what I need to do on it at this time beyond the usual repairs and oil changes. It has a manual transmission. Thanks for any help!Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
That is a chunk all at once but they should be done. The price does not seem out of line for what they did. As for doing it yourself, the trans fluid is hard to do since you should flush the cooling lines and the torque converter as well. That is why they use an in-line fluid exchange while the car is running.

The Saab should also have the fluids changed but the manual can be done by you since it won't have cooling lines to mess with. I'd wait untill I needed a clutch and do it when the trans is out.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
all you need is a bucket to catch the oil manual transmissions no advantage in changing the oil.. power stearing change oil what a rip off.. synthentick oil is not needed.. if you change the oil every 3 thousand and the filter.. use a straight viscosity 30 in the winter 40 and 50 in the summer.. all you need is a 5/8 wrench to open the oil drain.. the used oil place in a five gallon can.. the places that change oil will take it and put in their tank no charge.. buy penns oil or valvoline ok .Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
tranny fluid is recommended every 30,000 p/s flush recommended every 15,000. trans isnt hard just drop the plug drain the oil and put plug in and refill p/s needs a pump to pump out fluid and refill. foreign vehicles normally call for maintenance services every 30,000 miles call dealer for a service menu. do not flush if you havent done it from the start could damage trannyDid I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Referring to the owner's manual for recommended maintenance intervals is the only way to know for sure if they told you to change the fluids before they actually needed to be changed. As far as I know, however, most modern automatic transmissions don't require a fluid change that soon (and they don't require the P/S fluid to be changed that soon either...)

You can change your own oil at home using a set of ramps, an oil collection pan, a crescent wrench (for the oil plug) and a filter-wrench for the oil filter in less than 30 minutes. As long as you have somewhere to dispose of the oil (like Autozone or a local recycling center), it's easy. Changing other fluids can be more difficult - often times it's easy to drain the fluids (like in a transmission), but hard to re-fill them.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Okay as a mechanic, I say every 30000 miles you need to get your tansmission serviced. but thats only on an automatic. the power steering flush i dont understand unless the fluid was burnt up. The amount is not that bad because of the amount of work and the prices of synthetic oil. But these are all things you can do. you do have to be very careful when you do a trans. service though. oil change is no problem. but if you hve the right guy looking at it when you go in he can inform you of a major problem you might have in the future.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Sounds like they they took you for a ride in you own car and you don't remember. You should be able to get a service manual from your local library to help you. doing the oil changes is not too hard once you have done it it will be easier next time

As for a pump a large syringe with a plastic tube attached will do. Nearly all the cheep tools you can get from your cheaper auto shops

Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?

I know this may sound dumb to you experts but do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick? How do you actually %26quot;change%26quot; transmission like you would oil. Please, don't make rude comments. I'm trying to learn all this stuff.

I noticed my wifes car is slipping and has a funny smell when driving. I notice the smell being worse when I put it in reverse. The check engine light just came on recently and I'm trying to find out the cause.

I'm not good with cars, however, I'm trying to learn more.Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
Yes you add transmission fluid through the dipstick. The slipping and %26quot;funny smell%26quot; is probably due to being low on fluid. When you pull the dipstick, it may have a burnt smell. You may have left it go long enough that you have transmission damage now.

To change the transmission fluid varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some have a drain plug, while others don't. Either way you will have to drop the pan to replace the screen. The new screen should come with the required pan gasket. NOTE: This does not drain and replace all of the fluid within the transmission. It only gets what is in the pan. When refilling, do not overfill. Good luck.Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
I suggest you don't learn on your wife's car. You need to totally have the transmission fluid flushed out and replaced, as well as the filter, To do it properly requires a special machine to flush all the old fluid out. You can not drain all of the fluid without this machine. It's going to be WAY cheaper than a new trans so do it.Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
hey man im always learning myself its nothing to be ashamed of...to empty the tranny oil, you have to access the transmission oil pan. There should be a plug you can remove to let the oil drip out. Once its all out, you might as well unbolt the pan and clean it out, there is most likely alot of gunk in it. After you do that if you choose to, you have to buy a new gasket before you put the pan back on so it doesnt leak. When thats all said and done you can take a funnel and, yes, use the tranny dipstick tube to replace. Just make sure you find out how many quarts of oil it takes first...good luck!Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
yep is like that on every car or truck that is auto.. and no problem learning how to take care of your car is smart and it saves money... you really want to know about the cars you drive and how to do things to them to keep them running buy a repair book at any auto parts store will save you a lot of time and money and heres a good site i ve used has videos of a few things .. anyways yes you check and add the sam eplace on auto with a manual you have to get under it and remove a plug and use your finger tipDo you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
To answer your question you can add fluid directly into the dipstick if it is low, becareful when getting it flushed. Most of the time on newer cars if it does not need it, than it will not run the same afterwards due to the draining and gears not be properly lubed.Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
%26gt; Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?

yes. But make sure you do NOT over fill. That will blow the seal.

%26gt;%26gt; How do you actually %26quot;change%26quot; transmission like you would oil.

you change it by dropping down the tranny oil pan. it is NOT like changing engine oil (with oil drain bolt / plug).

Good Luck...Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
you forgot to mension what kind of car!, some cars you cant, they dont have a dipstick.Do you add transmission fluid through the dipstick?
Yeah, the hole where you pulled the dipstick out off is where you pour your new fluid. If your changing the fluid there should be a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan, you change it the same way you change oil, just drain it out, plug it back up, and pour in the new fluid. Also, just like oil, it helps to drain it when its hot, that way it flows out easier and you get it all out, but of course be careful not to burn your hands. Also when your refilling it you have to check the fluid while its hot, on a level surface, and the vehicle is in park. Your owners manual will tell you exactly how to check it. If you plan on keeping this car a while it would help to pay about $15 for a Hanes Repair Manual made specifically for your car. It will tell you how to do everything, its good for a person such as yourself, who doesn't know much about cars, to have because it explains all you need to know about your car. Even people who are car experts often have the Hanes Manual for their car, I know a good bit about cars and what I don't know my dad usually does, but I still always try to have a Hanes manual for whatever car I have.

If he wants more than 1500 for it, I would find something else. If it's under 1500, I would do a 120k service on it, figure around 500 bucks and that includes flushing all the fluids as well as many other items.About to buy a car that has been sitting for a while?
change all fluids like oil, trans, coolant.

i would flush the radiator too.

you might wanna try one of those STP fuel injector cleaner bottles.

make sure the trans fluid filter isnt clogged. (ive seen these clogged trans fluid filters ruin clutches in auto transmissions.)

these are great running trucks good luck hope this helped.About to buy a car that has been sitting for a while?
I guess you should also check insurance quotes for Cherokee before buying one, for example here: http://carquotes.fateback.com

As I rememer it is expensive to insure.

Dealership vs lube center for transmission flush?

I have read that a flush can harm the engine, but most places only do flushes when changing the transmission fluid including the dealership. Since you want to keep the name of your car a secret, it is hard to answer. FIrst of all, the local quicky lube usually only uses a general, universal trans fluid. THIS IS JUNK!!!! All modern cars have specific characteristics that must be met. VW/Audi uses a mineral oil, it's GOLD. Toyota uses Dexron-T. The %26quot;T%26quot; is for Toyota. The dealership will use the correct fluid, filter, and gasket for YOUR particular car. So many people lose the functioning of their transmission after a quicky lube gets a hold of them. The extra money you are spending is to support people that were actually TRAINED to work on YOUR CAR!!! SEE???? Most quicky lube techs have NO formal car education at all.Dealership vs lube center for transmission flush?

The Vechiles is a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 with 105k miles, It never had the transmission filter change never!A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
Some newer cars don't need to have the transmission fluid changed ever, however on an american car I suggest you do it right away. If you do it yourself the kit will cost about $50 or so at an auto parts store but I suggest you buy the kit at a dealer (some autoparts stores have very cheap gaskets and will probably leak transmission fluid) hope this helps.A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
ideal trans fluid and filter change is anywhere between 40k-65k. and no, changing it wont cause damage, however, NEVER attempt a trans flush as it might damage your trans internally due to the high pressure process it undergoes during the process, chances are higher in high mileage engines. for fluid capacity and filter exactness, go to your local auto part store and tell them your vehicles specification (i.e., year, make, model, type of trans, 2wd? 4wd?).A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
tranny service depending on area usually runs around 198.67 thats what we charge, now if you've never flushed trans don't do it, tranny fluid is basically a heavy duty cleaner and if you have years of build up it could be holding things together and flushing the stuff out will make things fall apart. but you should have filter replaced, about every year or 15k milesA quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
Trans oil should be changed every 30,000 miles Transmission parts,as any working device wears with age. These small particles are filtered out by the screen as does an oil filter does for an engine. Also the oils lubricating qualities break down over time. Ideally when you change the trans oil they should drill %26amp; tap the converter with a 1/8 pipe plug. Over half of the oil retained in the converter.

CHANGING TRANS FLUID IN 95 ISUZU RODEO?

is it ok to change the transmission fluid.

    95 isuzu has 105.000 miles.

    fluid in trans is brown.

how do i change it?CHANGING TRANS FLUID IN 95 ISUZU RODEO?
You dont say if it automatic or stick,, So I will assume its automatic, crawl under with tools and a big catch pan, you need to slowly start on the transmission pan and work your way around letting the fluid run out slow as you go, just make sure to leave a couple bolts in at least halfway so you dont drop the pan and make a mess, it will be very hard to clean up if you do,, Also I suggest finding big pieces of cardboard to stretch out on the ground first, have alot of rags handy just in case, and then after its all out and you clean the pan all out be sure to scrap off the old gasket, and use a very little bit of blue or red gasket sealer every so often on the pan, that will help keep gasket in place when you put it back on, and dont tighten them down very far at all, if your squishing the gasket out its to tight,, If all else fails, go to your nearest Auto Zone and look in the books,

I'm trying to change the automatic transmission fluid on my 97 eagle talon, but I can't get the drain pan off!

Loosened and removed all the bolts, tapped it with a rubber mallet, and nothing. I've heard stories about people gouging their drain pan and causing leaks so I'm afraind to pry it with something. The bolts were very difficult to remove, so I think it may have been a while since the last change but still It should come off right? Also, how do I know if my CV Joints need replacing? My car starts and runs, and revs and everything but doesnt move. I don't feel a %26quot;clunking%26quot; sound when I put it in gear like I used to, it feels like it doesnt engage at all. The car rolls if pushed, the wheels are not locked up. Hopefully its the joints.I%26039;m trying to change the automatic transmission fluid on my 97 eagle talon, but I can%26039;t get the drain pan off!
Your first question is that after you remove all the screw. take a flat scraper or a razer knife and go around the pan and it will lossen. As for you car not going into gear, check you fuild levels first, The fuild builds up pressure and engages the clutches and drive linkage to move the car. Low fuild will not allow the car to move and runnnng it that way will burn up the transmission. Cv joints will not completly break and will clunk loadly when bad. You really need to take you car in if all these things are happening. Firstly could be new tranny needed or the linkage between the shifter and the tranny could be disconnected. It would still clunk if it was put in gear and the joints were bad. The last person who did the oil on the tranny could have used a gasket maker as well as a gasket, so yah unfourtanetly you will have to get something to pry it with.I%26039;m trying to change the automatic transmission fluid on my 97 eagle talon, but I can%26039;t get the drain pan off!
if you got all the bolts out, it will come off. take a screwdriver and pry gently around the transmission pan lip, it will come, probably someone put sealer on the gasket.as for the cv joints, you say the car wont move, maybe the tranny filter is clogged up. i never heard of a cv joint locking up, but i guess it could, if they are bad enough.if the wheels turn, then the cv joints arent locked. i would be checking on the tranny filter, if its not pumping up, you wont move.I%26039;m trying to change the automatic transmission fluid on my 97 eagle talon, but I can%26039;t get the drain pan off!
CV Joints will make a clacking sound, in tight turns, for awhile before they break. When they break it is easy to see, the union out of the trans is turning, but at some other point everything is standing still. They break, they don't normally seize.

    Make, model, year would help.

    Manual transmission changes?

I have a Manual transmission on my Mazda 6, 2004 and I am wondering how to change my transmission fluid in the car. I have checked my manual on the car and it doesn't say anything about changing that fluid but when I bring it to the dealer they say it needs to be done. I have even brought it to a good year dealer and had the car up in the air and couldn't find the plug to here to drain the tranie fluid. Does it have a type of fluid that need changing?Manual transmission changes?
manual trans fluid don't need to be changed ! !

in auto trans the oil is the most essential part, it pushes the converter and generate power to your trans will move your car forward and shift so with no oil auto trans will not work and you have to change it on time because with the time that oil stick to the trans and block the pass of the new oil and make the trans fail

in manual trans the oil is only for lubricate, make gear softly, less sound and kept the trans and gears cool down so you don't have to change it because the oil don't make such an important thing like in auto trans

if you want to change it you can do it but is not so necessary like in auto trans.....Manual transmission changes?
Usually a square ( 4 sided) head pipe plug located near bottom of tranny on side.

On my 2000 honda odyssey there's no writing on the transmission dipstick. How do I know when it's low?

We think we need to change the transmission fluid in our 2000 Honda Odyssey. When checking the fluid there are no markings on the dipstick except for 2 small holes. How do you tell when it's low?On my 2000 honda odyssey there%26039;s no writing on the transmission dipstick. How do I know when it%26039;s low?
. The two small holes or notches%26quot; The one closest to the tip of the stick, maybe 1-2 inches?, is where the fluid level should be when the engine is Cold. The top hole, maybe 1/2 incher higher UP the stick, is where the Hot fluid level is.On my 2000 honda odyssey there%26039;s no writing on the transmission dipstick. How do I know when it%26039;s low?
The two holes measure the transmission fluid level at normal operating temperature, not %26quot;cold/hot.%26quot; The space between the two dots measures 1 pint of fluid. if the fluid only comes up to the bottom mark and your engine is at normal temperature, you should add one pint of the manufacturers reccomended grade of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid.) Your owner's manual will have that information. Also, before you get your fluid changed, you will want to go to several mechanics to make sure, I say several because some will smell the fluid (smelling for burnt - smells) or judge the fluid by it's color. NEITHER of those are good indicators of the fluids wear. You can flush a transmission completely, change the internal filter and fill with fresh fluid and it can still come out black a week later. The best judgement is to go by the mileage in your vehicle. Your owner's manual should be able to tell you the reccomended interval for having the fluid/filter changed in your transmission.

There are no real tricks to this. Put it in Park %26amp; block the wheels. You may not even need to jack up the truck. If you do, place jack stands of a suitable weight rating under the frame to hold it up. You don;t want to trust the jack to maintain it's pressure holding up the vehicle.

Your tranny may have a drain plug. Verify by looking at a shop manual (at the library if you don't have one). Drain the fluid while the motor is still warm. Then, remove the bolts around the perimeter of the tranny pan. Be prepared for a bit more fluid to run out.

The filter is right there, and usually is held in with just a washered bolt or two. Some just rest inside without any fastener. Swap the filter. Install a new pan gasket. Bolt it up. Refill.

Keep in mind, this only gets about 1/4 of the fluid out of the entire system. For example, many drain and fills require 4-5 qts of fluid, but there is another 10 qts hiding in the torque converter. If you have alot of miles, please consider a complete flush by a local shop. It's not cheap, but you can find a full transmission service for $125 or so if you shop around.

It should be listed in the owners manual. If not I would call a dealer. If I had to geuss I would say 4 to 8 quarts. Not sure how they fill as I play with 73-87 Chevy trucks. Most manual transmissions have a fill plug in the side. You fill them until oil comes out the fill hole. How much fluid does a 95 gmc3500 manual transmission take?
start with a gallon in ahalf then add more while it is running. usually depending on the what trans you got 700r or t400 it should be between 12 and 14 quarts. I know it seems like a lot but thats what it is. let the tranny get to temp before adding more fluid after you put in the first gallon and a half. If you just installed the trans you should have put fluid in the converter first if not go ahead and proceed with the above directions. How much fluid does a 95 gmc3500 manual transmission take?
it takes gear fluid, after drained, you fill it by removing a cap bolt on the side of the transmission, and fill it with a hand held suck pump, not fun, the fluid is sucked up the pump and squeezed out a rubber tube into the tranny, there is no dipstick when fluid is at the top of the side hole and no more can be added, it is full.

Ok dude your working on a girlfriends only transportation better get it right. When I preform a drain and fill on a 2000 Nissan Xterria I put approximately 3 quarts back down the dip stick tube with a long narrow funnel. Start up the truck (your not done yet) remove the funnel drive back and forth on the drive way using all the gear selections P N R D 1 2 and so on. This will allow the passage ways to fill back up. Now while running neutral or park dip the stick back in. If the stick comes out with fluid all over it wait about 3 to 5 minutes while the truck is idling and warming up for the Mercon 3 Dextron fluid is drain off the sides of the dip stick tube. Most the time if you buy 5 quarts you will have an unopened Qt. Some times it takes as little as 3 quarts most the time 4 qts. once in a while the torque converter drains and it can take the 5. Nissan Specification for dry trans is 8 3/4 quarts 2x4 and 9 qts for 4x4. Here is the precaution if this trans has never been changed in almost 130,000 miles it may already be toasted and changing the fluid will make the transmission act funny with new fluid. Good LuckTransmission fluid how much does a 00 4wd nissan xterra take?
John paul is right about changing the fluid out that late. It may slip with the new fluid

I will also say to use Nissan fluid only or for a better fluid use amsoil

I just changed all of my fluid in my 06 dropping the pan will only change a few quarts not the best idea

My 06 has a tranny cooler up front behind the grille I pulled the grille (it's super easy) pulled the hose off the lower line of the cooler and put it in a bucket. I marked 13 quarts on the bucket with water then dried the bucket. I had a friend start the X while I poured fluid back into he dipstick while the old fluid was pumped out into the bucket. I poured in 13 qts when the old came up to the mark I buttoned it up and was spot on on th dipstick My friend shifted thru the gears as we exchanged fluid. I used 13 qts to be sure I got all the old out.

you can google this method for pic's

don't forget the diffs and transfercase those fluids will be toast as well

i need to change the fluid, however there is no conventional dipstick like on most cars. Does anybody have an idea as to where it is?How do i put transmission fluid in a 2002 BMW 745i?
From underneath. There's a fill plug and a drain plug located on the transmission pan. It looks counter-intuitive because the fill plug is actually on the bottom of the transmission, albeit inside a deep recess.

Although the transmission is a different model between the E38 and E65 7-series, the servicing procedure is basically the same. Take a look at the link I've posted below, as well as several others on the E38.org page.

Be sure to use the proper fluid (available from your dealer, or some dealer alternatives, such as bavauto.com. It's expensive, but necessary! And use a high-quality filter and gasket for the pan. Remember when working inside an automatic transmission that it's important to keep everything very clean.

A broad answer would be at 30,000 miles. Some higher and some as low as 15,000 miles. Check the maintenance schedule in your owners manual or see a high quality auto repair shop. They can print you a schedule that comes straight from the factory.Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?

i change mine about every 10.000miles,and yes you change the filter when you change the fluid,if you are doing a lot of towing service your transmission every 5000 milesTransmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
Replace the fluid every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. The filter can be replaced at 90,000 or 120,000 miles. For replacing the fluid, frequent drain and fills (or pump out and fills) are enough. I don't recommend flushes.

In response to your ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Forget what others said about the year. All (older) 4Runners should have the fluid replaced every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Since your daughter got the car used, have her replace all the fluids and oil if she doesn't know the car's maintenance history. That means the motor oil (and filter), transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid (not as important as the other fluids), and differential gear oil (if it's a 4WD). Also replace the spark plugs (with Denso or NGK brand) and check the air filter.Transmission question on a Toyota 4 runner?
Seriously Buy an american car, they dont usually care if the trasnny fluid is changed, but I do change it, and when it comes out it comes out red like it is supossed to.

All kidding aside, if it is an automatic, try to find instruction if possible about being able to drain the torque convertor, it holds a typical 1.5 gallons, and will make a HUGE difference.

    good luck

you have the late model 01M auto tranny. The older 096 tranny has a dipstick but VW decided to eliminate it on the 01M to prevent fluid contamination. I suggest to just drain it out and replace the fliud. The tranny has a short spout with a plastic cap that must be replaced. It is also possible to swap a 096 dipstick tube to a 01M. I must do more research, my wifey has a Cabrio with a 01M and the gears are starting to slip.

Transmission fluid & filter on a 06 Subaru Outback?

How often are you supposed to change the transmission fluid and filter on a 2006 subaru outback? Mine has 61,000 milesTransmission fluid %26amp; filter on a 06 Subaru Outback?
The owners manual should tell you exactly when to change everything and if you don't have one, you can download the schedule off their website. If I remember, I was told by Subaru that the Auto tranny filter is a lifetime thing and does not need to be changed. Lifetime sounds long since many of these cars last forever but should be fine for well over 100,000 miles. The fluid can't really be changed completely without dropping the pan. just a drain and fill only gets about 60% of the fluid out even if done at a shop. You have a couple options. You can do the drain and fill, drive around a few miles and then do it again and should have about 80% fresh fluid. Or you can take it somewhere to have flushed where they hook the car up to a machine and pump fresh fluid through till it's 100% new. Problem is, automatic tranny's need a small amount of fine grit to work better so flushing on a higher mileage car is not recommended.

Why would you want to change it yourself? On your own all you will be able to do is a %26quot;drain and fill%26quot; in which you will be lucky to get half of the total fluid out (a few quarts at best). The only proper way to change transmission fluid is to flush it with a flush machine, ensuring all of the old fluid is removed.

  • 2000 Escalade transmission fluid. The truck has been parked for about eight months...now what?

I wanted to know since the truck has been parked for so long...I would very much like to (or better yet have to) change the transmission fluid...how much should I add to the trans.? I'm asking because of the hi/lo 2x2/4x4 four wheel drive option that is in the drivetrain.2000 Escalade transmission fluid. The truck has been parked for about eight months...now what?
The transmission for this truck holds 15 quarts of fluid. The only way to get all the fluid replaced is by doing a flush with a machine. If you do a drain and fill by taking the plug off, you'd be lucky to get 5 quarts out if not less.2000 Escalade transmission fluid. The truck has been parked for about eight months...now what?
Did it all leak out or something???

If it didn't leak out, why would want to add any???

    I'm confused??

They sit at the dealers lots for months...All they do is stick a battery in it, start it up and drive away.......

How much transmission fluid does a 1993 Ford F150 need?

I am going to change the automatic transmission fluid and my Haynes manual says I need to add 17 quarts to refill it. Can this be right? People in the parts store said it was only ten, maximum but didn't seem sure.... Thanks.

17 qt`s ? Where are you supposed to put the other 10 ? assuming you drained the converter. Haynes does not use spell check, hence 17 qt`s . If all you do is drain the pan, change the filter. Then you should need no more than 4-5 qt`sHow much transmission fluid does a 1993 Ford F150 need?
If you drop the pan than these guys are right. A good rule of thumb is to watch what you lose and replace it with a quart less, check fluid and fill accordingly.

However, MAKE SURE YOUR REPLACEMENT FLUID MATCHES WHAT YOU DRAINED. Mixing two different fluids is a recipe for disaster, especially in a Ford.
